#OnThisDay in 1657, residents of Flushing (Queens) addressed the #FlushingRemonstrance to Peter Stuyvesant demanding religious freedom in the Dutch colony of New Netherland, articulating the principle of #FreedomOfReligion for the first time in US history:

The first document calling for #ReligiousFreedom among the Europeans of North America was signed; the #FlushingRemonstrance. Created by non-Quaker English citizens of what would become New York to protest official persecution of Quakers. It called to end a ban on Quaker worship.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1657, in the Dutch colony of #NewAmsterdam, Freedom of Religion was articulated in the #FlushingRemonstrance. The #Dutch were pioneers in religious tolerance, and rooting this principle in the colony that became New York points toward the #FirstAmendment.
This is what I mean. A truly embodied Quaker #spirituality.
