THE WAY OF PERSEUS, PATRIARCHY, AND SOLAR THEOLOGIES Page 23 So, patriarchal Zeus provides the helmet of darkness so Perseus can hide himself; it is no surprise that such helmet has its source in the god, Hades, ruler of the underworld and darkness and the land of misery and suffering. The helmet then, is much like the ring that is given Frodo. As connoisseurs of Tolkein know well, the ring is forged in the fire of Mount Doom, deep in the heart of the land of the evil ruler, Sauron, in the land of Mordor. Put another way, it comes from hell. Also, the ring hides Frodo, very much like the helmet of darkness hides Perseus. Using it, Frodo is able to become invisible temporarily. However, the Lord of the Rings story or myth goes deeper than the Perseus myth in revealing the truth about using the ring or the helmet of darkness. For every time Frodo uses the ring, every time he hides, he becomes more visible to the Lord of Darkness, Sauron, he becomes more like the Dark Force (borrowing from Star Wars, now, which also has parallels to these two stories). So one becomes darker, more miserable, more alone and alienated, the more one dissembles and hides one’s true self from others. Eventually one becomes a pathetic Gollum. Or a Sith emperor, not much different.
