It is thin and somewhat weak-looking, with only one visible eye, while the other is covered by a tuft of drooping "hair" and a fin crest, which in other specimens is erect but here is drooping. The visible eye is white, due to the light reflecting off the tapetum lucidum. The pistrix is covered in jewels of various shapes and also in some drapes of fabric. It wears a distinctive crown, which falls crookedly on its head. Behind it, the shapes of a decorated throne and other various geometrical features can be discerned. This is an image of the legendary King Azoth.
King Azoth. He may or may not be a real king from the past and his people, the pistrix, may or may not have ever had a monarchy.

Here's a reference sketch, made with black ballpoint pen, (with a size comparison) of three different species: - The deep-sea merfolk (Abyssugens hispida), with its 5-meter female and its 1.30-1.50-meter male - The pistrix (Apocapisces regalecus), pictured here with only the 7-meter-long female (the males are more or less the same length, they just tend to be thinner and less imposing, but also more ornate) - The common merfolk (Maregens vulgaris), where the males are larger, and the one pictured here is a full 2.5 meters long (but still quite small compared to the other two species).
Deep-sea merfolk rarely encounter other sapient species due to the depths at which they live: common merfolk live primarily in the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones, pistrix live in the bathypelagic zone, while deep-sea merfolk live in the abyssopelagic zone.

Although both are tall, Sangreal is truly enormous. The scenes have a warm, cuddly feel. In one scene, Sangreal is in his natural form, a fish with an elongated body and bright red fins reminiscent of an oarfish (Regalecus glesne), and is giving Seraphin a little kiss on the cheek. One of the most recurring themes in the illustrations is that Seraphin is a caring person, who loves to cuddle and hug others, while Sangreal is completely unaccustomed to touching other people.
Once upon a future time, in a magical land (France) there will be a marine biologist and a fish person who feel very fondly for one another...
