A unicorn shaped painting hanging outside on a bright sunny day. The unicorn is painted black and dotted with stars. Connecting lines show constellations. There’s a full moon in place of the unicorn’s eye, and a comet streaking across the unicorn’s cheek. It had a glittery blue horn and a shimmery blue and purple mane pained in a graphic style. A large constellation on the unicorn’s neck is labeled “Monoceros” in silver letters. Above it is the small constellation Canis Minor, though it is not labeled.

If you were to shine a black light on this painting, the moon and the stars that make up Monoceros would glow. The artist used Fluorescent paint.

I picked up 15 unicorn-shaped birch panels. I’m having a lot of fun with these. This is the first one. Did you know there’s a unicorn constellation? It’s called Monoceros! The best time to see it where I am is in February and March, between Orion, Canis Major, & Canis Minor.

Are there any #folklorefolks who can help me work out what this reference is? I've never used abbreviations like this in referencing ' L&L' - as in
theresa buckland, l&l 3:2 (1980), 1–8 (also 3:7 (1982), 87, and 4:1 (1985), 86–7). #folklore #history

Watercolor painting. A stag with the sun in his antlers. The pentacle behind him is made of Yule greens and woods: birch, fir, holly, ivy, and pine. The background is a blue sky with snowflakes.

A watercolor and ink painting of the Mari Llwyd: A singing horse skull with ribbons, bells, and mistletoe in its mane. It has red Christmas balls for eyes, and a white sheet for a neck. She’s singing “Deck the Halls”, which appears from her mouth as spiraling sheet music. The door to a stone sided home in behind her, and a soft golden glow emits from inside.

A watercolor painting of the Cailleach and one of her stags. An old woman leans on a staff in a flurrying snowstorm. She’s wearing a deep blue block and hood, but her skin is also blue, and her long silver hair hangs over her shoulders and down to her knees. She has a frozen halo behind her head, and ice shocks the ground where her staff rests. Her other hand rests on the back of her shaggy stag. He has frost and icicles in his antlers. The background is full of gently rolling hills covered in snow.

Hey #folklorefolks is there a better feed for following folklore in a more ... IDK academic way?

There's just so much Taylor Swift and DND here (which is fine! but I'm looking for folklore *specifically*)

The Hydra appears in DND 5e and pathfinder 2e as well both where the they have 5 heads rather than 9. They're weak to fire. In 5e Hydra has legs while the pathfinder Hydra is completely snake. It also appears in Warhammer Fanasty as a Dark Elf unit where it breathes fire.

The Hydra has a parallel in Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian myth where the war and hunting god Ninurta slew 11 monsters including a 7-headed serpent which can be associated or the same monster as Mushmahhu and Bashmu. The Bashmu constellation is associated with the Hydra

Heracles with his nephew Lolaus cut off the heads of the hydra and prevented more from growing back by Causterizing the wounds. Then they cut off the immortal head and buried it under a rock. Heracles dipped the arrows in its venom/blood to use as a potent weapon.

Monster Posting Day 14
A hydra is a snake-like monster with around 9 heads in the Lake of Lerna, an entrance to the underworld, it is the offspring of Typhon and Echidna like many monsters. It was said to have one immortal head and if you cut off one head two would grow back.

Trigger Warning: SA/child abuse

The Tokoloshe is said to be a scapegoat for SA/child abusein South Africa. When parents and victims are afraid of accusing someone they will blame a tokoloshe when talking to doctors and priests, meaning this monster has real world affect

The Tokoloshe can be banished by religious figures and can be advoided by elevating your bed. It is thought that this originated from the fact that sleeping on the floor by the fire used to caused Carbon Monoxide poisoning so members of the tribe learned to elevate their bed

Chimera appear in both pathfinder/ DND where they add the head of a dragon to the Chimera which makes sense given the fire breath influenced European depictions of dragon. They appear Full Metal Alchemist, where alchemy combines different creatures. Sometimes unethically

#folklorefolks #culture

Post image

As technically speaking IRL Chimera don't have to be diffrent species just simply diffrent parts with different genetics. Many species can be grafted onto each other creating Chimeras and we've sucessesfully grafted fish skin into human skin to repair burned tissue.

#folklorefolks #culture

There has man made chimera, such as the spider goat, which is a goat who we genetically programmed to produce the proteins needed to create spider web, though humans manually have to extract it from the milk. Chimeraism technically happens in humans with organ transplants

It has come to mean any combination of animals, limited chimera genetics have been foud such as the the lobster in Maine that was that was half blue, half , and also a hematrhodite. Also Marmosets, where 95% of Fraternal twins trade blood with each other in the womb.

The Cockatrice also appears in Dragon's Dogma, Little Witch Academia ,My Little Pony for some fucking reason and is referenced in Mutiple works of Shakespearem. It also appears in DND/Pathfinder, with DND establishing that the Cockatrice and Basilisk turn people to stone

Like, a Basilisk its gaze and breath kills humans. Also like the Basilisk it's weak to Weasels, the sound of a rooster and its own reflection. The cockatrice appears in mutiple works such as a passing reference in Harry Potter as well as the Little Witch Academia video game.

As in Egypt they would destroy the eggs of the Ibis bird, over fear of it becoming a bird snake hybrid, born the birds consumption of snakes. To prevent a cockatrice from hatching from your chicken eggs, yo can destroy the egg by tossing it over the house without hitting it.

Monster Posting Day 11
The Cockatrice is a mythical two legged beast similar to a dragon with a rooster's head. It is similar if not a variation of the same beast that is the Basilisk. Born when a chicken egg is hatched by a toad or snake. Possibly originating in Egypt
