Looking West through the canyon, gravel road cuts from center to upper right, tall mesa in the right background, cedar trees dot the canyon walls as a car travels the lonesome scenic byway in the New Mexico Hi-Lo country.

Longest gravel scenic byway in New Mexico? Probably NM-456 in the Hi-Lo Country’s Dry Cimarron Canyon.

Join a caravan tour with the Folsom Museum August 30th, with a lunch stop at a Dry Cimarron Valley Ranch.

And it’s free.

Four young cowboys in full cowboy gear hold down a calf while an older herdsman looks on with a small herd of whiteface cows in the background, on a high vega or meadow with trees behind, on the Philmont Scount Ranch some time in the 1930s. (Foto from Folsom Museum FB Page)

Branding at Philmont in the 1930s was a big job. The young cowboy in the black hat (with his back to the camera) is Waite Phillips's son Elliott. They called him “Chope." This branding was taking place at the La Grulla Cow Camp on the Philmont Scout Ranch.

Guests hang out in the front hall of the Folsom Museum, a mercantile building owned by the Doherty family. Built in 1896, the museum houses interpretive displays about the Folsom archaeological find, George McJunkin (the former slave who found the site) and regional history and many, many artifacts.

The Folsom Museum is open every day in summer.
Just a short drive north of the Capulin Volcano National Monument, the Museum is a must-visit to learn about the history and pre-history of the region.
Plus, we have ice cream, snacks, and a cool giftshop.
