PJM Addressing Growing Electricity Demand from Data Centers
The Pennsylvania Independent System Operator (PJM) is actively addressing the surge in electricity demand fueled by the rapid expansion of data centers, which has strained the existing infrastructure and created forecast uncertainties. To mitigate these issues, PJM is focusing on increasing load flexibility through demand response programs, encouraging data centers to participate in energy reduction efforts, and improving electricity load forecasts. With significant progress made in clearing the backlog of generation projects seeking connection to the grid and robust forecasting practices in place, PJM aims to maintain a delicate balance between supply and growing demand as it looks to the future and prepares for its next cycle of new generation projects in Spring 2026.
