‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends in the right direction’
Theodore Parker

Discussing with students whether the prisons could ever improve. Reflected on Parker’s quote being hard to believe, but harder not to believe. The current status quo is unsustainable #ForensicOT

Taught a wonderfully engaged group of students about #OccupationalTherapy in prisons at YorkStJohn today. I’m increasingly reassured by the increased understanding of adverse childhood experiences & the more permissive attitudes students have towards those who offend. Change is occurring #ForensicOT

4 lectures in 2 weeks at Brunel and city & St George’s university for #OccupationalTherapy students, talking about #ForensicOT & about OT in the justice system.

Coming back to life after a long & challenging 2 years of service development. Time to get back to some broader connections again ☺️

The evidence demonstrates considerable links between childhood adversity & offending behaviour, at huge costs to individuals and society. While solutions to offending are complex, the need for investment in childhood is obvious, yet here we are…

1st chance to read a book of my choosing after a year focussing on #ForensicOT articles. Where better to start than some prison reading

Reading my pal Andy’s fantastic book about teaching philosophy in prisons intertwined with his families imprisonment & his own struggles. Just brilliant! #PrisonOT

Some mindblowing chapters that fit perfectly with what I need to back findings & thoughts around need for #OccupationalTherapy to work with & create communities to support forensic patients integration into society. Work is not the panacea it was claimed to be. Alternatives needed #ForensicOT

Spent the day reading and taking notes on 26 papers re #ForensicOT I’ve discovered this is well and truly my daily limit. My brain can take no more words!

Managed to sneak in a call to arrange supervision for OT students on #Ecotherapy placements next year too 🌱

In a 2015 Canadian study, 65% of forensic Occupational Therapists experienced personal stigma within this role, experiencing language such as ‘con lover’!

I’ve noticed a significant positive shift in the past decade, though much work remains to be done

The reading just gets better & better. Although not specifically an #OccupationalTherapy textbook, this is edited & has significant contribution from Jenny, an OT within probation, & is a great contribution to OT thinking. The chapter on the concept of ‘mattering’ is fantastic. #ForensicOT

One of my favourite researchers in forensic mental health has done a series of lectures on Radio 4.

Gwen Adshead is always worth a listen. Good to hear she is speaking on rel between trauma, dysregulation and violence

Reading about stigma & mental health.

Despite a 1 in 10 million chance of being killed by a stranger with schizophrenia, approx same chance as being hit by lightning, we live in a society that appears preoccupied by the dangerousness of those with MH problems (Trebilock & Weston, 2020) #ForensicOT
