Highly recommend it. As some already said; he had a gread run in the 60's, extraordinary live TV work in the 50's and he had a nice comeback in the mid-90's. The time inbetween is a bit hit and miss while he was batteling inner demons. But even at his worst he was one to study. #FrankenheimerFriday

Couldn't agree more. Frankenheimer's worst movies are still masterclasses. Even at his apparently most drunk on PROPHECY there's so much to unpack and enjoy, it's crazy.

In Deutschland erschien John Frankenheimers 52 PICK-UP, eine Elmore-Leonard-Verfilmung, zwar erst im Frühjahr 1987 - doch in den USA war am 7. November 1986 Kinostart. Ein waschechter Neo Noir mit viel Licht, Schatten, nackter Haut, Schweiß und moralischen Grautönen. ❤️

And it's still a way better movie than people give it credit. Suboptimal casting, but there's something to the way Frankenheimer directed it. And Sharon Stone gives it all there is to give in this role.

#FrankenheimerFriday is a good day to watch it - or any Frankenheimer picture.

It's just that the Weinstein's messed with the edit a lot which made Frankenheimer very unhappy. While DVD was still booming back in the days they agreed to give Frankenheimer the opportunity to create a director's cut. Not up there with Ronin, but fun. 2/2

Oh for sure. And its origin is even weirder. It's a parody of an old soap commercial slogan - as the title of a pop art action movie.

I experimented with the title to parody it again on my recent novel, but my editor convinced me not to confuse every possible reader, haha.

It's a great 80's East meets West picture with all the elements in place that you already mentioned - plus a Jerry Goldsmith score and Steven Seagal fight choreography.

There's still not enough praise for how amazing John Frankenheimer was. And that's not only counting his masterpieces. Even his so called lesser films are masterclasses in how to do it.

I'm fascinated by the movie that could've been in this case. We already got two different versions of essentially the same movie eventually. Frankenheimer probably would've been closer to Schrader, but with Liam Neeson in the lead and more split diopter shots.

"König Ballermann" alias "99 and 44/100% Dead!" ist mehr Pop-Art-Experiment als ein richtiger Film - dafür aber enorm unterhaltsam. So sehr ich Rodriguez' "Desperado" auch liebe: das entspannt von einer Explosion weglaufen hat John Frankenheimer hier schon früher exerziert.

True. All of it. Frankenheimer's gone for 20+ years now so it seems easy to forget what a master he was (even on his weaker movies). But that's why I celebrate #FrankenheimerFriday almost every week. And French Connection II is definetly one of those that should get far more praise.
