Good to see - like £bns of UK gov grants - the grants for the (sadly short-lived) @DCMS-backed, independently-run by @nesta_uk #FutureNewsFund are now accessible via @360Giving.
Who'd've thought that the first journalism funder to go open would...
This @futurefest conversation - with @hazelsheffield @ElizaTalks @CharlieBeckett - was conceived pre-Covid, in the golden before-times of the @nesta_uk #FutureNewsFund, but, you know, 2020.
We recorded it while Trump (who?) was being airlifted out of DC on Jan 6th.
On funding and innovation, there's a fair bit on the @DCMS-backed @nesta_uk/@bg_ventures #FutureNewsFund (not currently active), and an exhortation to @GOVUK to bring those with resources together to help the industry adapt/transform (a UK #JournalismFundersForum, maybe?):
Themes include:
- #CairncrossReview's diagnosis
- @nesta_uk/@bg_ventures' #FutureNewsFund
- field support for public interest #journalism
- local media
- #mediacoops & other member-driven orgs
- funding from tech, #philanthropy & @DCMS

This was part of the #FutureNewsFund, one of the recommendations of the #CairncrossReview, and it’s particularly interesting as it combines multiple datasets that I haven’t seen used in this way before.

I can't believe I had forgotten about 4iP, the digital media innovation fund that @Channel4 launched in 2009, 10 years before the #FutureNewsFund... (Reminded by reading an interview w @bg_ventures @MelanieHayes, who I think worked on...
Two wildcard potential new entrants who could stimulate the field are:
- the new @GruppoCDP Italian Innovation Fund, under @francesca_bria
- and @nesta_it, along the lines of its UK counterpart’s #FutureNewsFund (which I’ve been involved in).
