Ok, I actually went into the VR code and could fix some red flags in the swapchain handling. This resulted in a much faster presentation, and #GaiaSkyVR on Linux is now quite usable. There's some stuttering when turning the head, I'll try to fix that next.
Works, but the experience is borderline unusable. My GPU is also clearly underpowered for the Index. The fact that it's Pascal-based may also play a role, as Pascal and earlier architectures are notably bad on Linux, and Nvidia dropped support not long ago.

Today is testing day, so it's time to dust off the Valve Index and see how much VR on Linux has improved since the last time I tried (it was underwhelming). With the Steam Frame on the horizon, I'm kind of excited to see the progress.

The new Steam Frame looks very promising for demos. If the graphics chip in the headset is powerful enough, it could run #GaiaSkyVR without the need of a PC. It already runs well on the Steam Deck, so there is hope. We'll need to wait for the specs to come out.
