4/4/76 durham: keith seems a bit more awake this show than other recent gigs, stepping up on many songs, including a sweet RUSSIAN LULLABY (bass solo now part of the arrangement it seems). WHO WAS JOHN works up slo-mo steam. pretty gliding AFTER MIDNIGHT tempo […]

4/3/76 washington DC: beautiful passage of quiet detailing in I’LL TAKE A MELODY. RUSSIAN LULLABY gets a bass solo that subtly hands off to guitar. 2 big jams in the late show, opening with 19-minute DON’T LET GO, which doesn’t go out as much as down, skeletal platform for garciaing, piano only […]

4/1/76 waterbury: wow, okay, so maybe 2 out-facing jam songs *can* co-exist in the JGB repertoire. 16-minute DON’T LET GO closes the early show, though the bright SUGAR MAGNOLIA-like jam is already gone, instead the groove widening for garcia question marks […]

Like another poster here, this was the first time | heard Jerry live. The beautiful
Music Hall inside the K.C. Municipal Auditorium. So great to hear Jerry in a great
sounding venue the first time. Like the other poster, my first GD show was St. Louis
5/15/1977...First K.C. Dead show was 10/28/1977 at Memorial Hall, Kansas
City, KS...Great way to start my trip.

Robert Neuhaus | Tuesday, May 14th, 2019

I got into the Dead while | was in High School, circa 1973-74. Unfortunately | was
living in Kansas City, where for some reason the Dead didn't perform for almost 5
years, between late '72 and late '77. It didn't help that the '75 hiatus happened
during that time, but getting to see Jerry at this show in ‘76 was such a joy!
Hearing Jerry perform songs that | already knew so well was just fantastic. The
Music Hall is a beautiful Art Deco venue, well suited to the Garcia Band. And if
am not mistaken | think | saw Betty herself behind the house mix console. | did
finally see the GD in St. Louis on 5/15/77 and they returned to KC that fall. It was
2 great time period to get on the bus!
