Re-watching "Dances With Wolves" (1990) with Graham Greene (d.2025): 4-hour extended version serves the elegiac tone well. A lot of scenes filmed in Lakota (Sioux language).

Native plant enthusiast: "I've got cats on my Zizea! Hope this one isn't embarrassed to have a pic with its frass!"
Translation: "I've got black swallowtail caterpillars on my Golden Alexanders (Zizea aurea)! Hope this one isn't embarrassed to have a pic with its poop!"

March 1. There are some signs of green among the leaves. The sticks look pretty bad, and I'm itching to get rid of them.
April 1. The new growth looks great, but I'm still wanting to get rid of those sticks.
May 1. A few sticks? Who cares?! Most have fallen over, or been overgrown by new growth.
Leaving the sticks and stems... Here's what it looks like on March 1, April 1, and May 1! I'll add another in June, when the plants will probably be blooming.

I counted 29 species of Virginia native plants blooming in my yard today! Including the ones in the pics.

Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is a real cutie! Just a few inches tall. Blooming today, will be dormant in early May. It's only above ground for about 2 months!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
Toadshade Trillium (Trillium sessile) getting ready to bloom. Pretty foliage. I'm glad to see it multiplying a little!

In 2021, I went out each Monday and recorded which natives were blooming in my yard. I created a bloom time spreadsheet which can be found here on Facebook. www.facebook.com/share/p/18hh...
Anyone know how to share a file here on BlueSky?

I divided my bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) last summer while it was dormant. The dense flowers are the original area, the other photos are new areas!

First Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) sighting of the season! In a very sheltered spot. Looks like a heart.

As of today, 6 native plants are blooming in my yard near Richmond, Virginia:
Bloodroot
Coral Honeysuckle
Spicebush
Prairie Willow
Virginia Spring Beauty

Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica). They start blooming almost as soon as they pop out of the ground! It will just be a few more days. It's exciting to see the buds!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
So many exciting plants today! This is Aromatic Sumac (Rhus aromatica). The straight species is tall (6-12'). There is also a popular cultivar called Gro-Low (not as desirable for wildlife as a straight species) that stays very short - about 1.5-2' for me.

I divided and transplanted some bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) last year, early summer. Glad to see it blooming in its new location!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
My Prairie Willow (Salix humilis) is starting to bloom! Soon, it will be covered with early pollinators, and they will be covered with pollen. It is a short shrub - 6' or so in my yard, and getting a bit wider each year.

Another bean family favorite: Blue Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis). Late to wake up in spring. Does great in hot, sunny, dry places. Tough plant. For some reason, I have no pics of it in my vast picture collection!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
One of my favorite bean family plants will be blooming soon: Redbud trees! (Cercis canadensis) We don't usually think of trees as being beans.
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
My bloodroot is blooming (Sanguinaria canadensis)! This clump is more sheltered than other parts of my yard, and blooms first. Spring is here!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
My Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are finally popping up! They bloom almost instantly after they appear, so we're getting close. I couldn't take a picture, because I don't want to accidentally step on any of them.
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
New growth on a Virginia native Sedum (Sedum ternatum). Pretty in pots and in the ground!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
My Priairie Willow (Salix humilis) is getting ready to bloom. Soon, it will be covered with pollen and pollinators!
#nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
Another sign of spring: Golden Groundsel (Packera aurea). Purple buds, then yellow flowers, then white fluffy seed heads. Toss in evergreen foliage and you've got a great plant!
