The usually alert lieutenant is now unaware that the exam has come to a pause. But rather than bring her back to her senses, Janice lets Grace quietly think. The doctor is aware of the burden Lieutenant Anvill places upon her shoulders, and allows her exhausted friend a brief moment of rest, desperately wishing she could heal Grace’s pain.
