Rising Electricity Bills Loom Over PJM Region as Summer Approaches
Rising electricity bills are anticipated across 13 states served by the PJM Interconnection, potentially increasing by over 20% this summer. The PJM region, home to a high concentration of data centers, faces an escalating energy consumption challenge, where demand is growing faster than the construction of new power plants. A recent capacity auction witnessed an over 800% price increase, directly influencing consumer electricity rates. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the need for PJM to improve efficiency, transparency, and cost control, noting encouraging initial steps and continued collaboration. Jeffrey Shields, a PJM spokesperson, explained that high prices will persist until supply meets the current rate of demand growth, highlighting a fundamental economic principle. While significant new projects—enough to power 40 million homes—have been approved, construction is being hindered by factors including local opposition, supply chain disruptions, and financing obstacles. The grid operator previously suspended processing new power plant connection applications in 2022 due to a backlog of over 2,000 requests, primarily from renewable energy projects, requiring extensive engineering assessments.
