GHRC – Recent Developments in Justice and Human Rights Elections for the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Constitutional Court, and attorney general are progressing, with positive results in some areas and concerning results in others. The international community is closely monitoring these elections. The United States, the European Union, the Organization of American States, and the United Nations High Commissioners Office for Human Rights have openly expressed concern about some of the candidates.

GHRC – Recent Developments in Justice and Human Rights Tensions are rising in Guatemala as key election processes get underway. President Bernardo Arévalo has instituted a state of siege to combat gang-related violence that experts say appears to be aimed at destabilizing his government. The months ahead may be turbulent for Guatemala. Monitoring the situation and being willing to respond is crucial.  A recent update from Guatemala Human Rights Commission (GHRC)

Coup Attempt Thwarted in Guatemala The Guatemala Human Rights Commission (GHRC) posted recently about how democracy has again been threatened in Guatemala. A judge, at the request of the Public Ministry, declared that President Bernardo Arévalo’s political party, Semilla, was not legally constituted, declared the party annulled, and ordered the Guatemalan Congress and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to take corresponding legal measures. The order was widely interpreted as a coup attempt, as it implied that any seats Semilla party members had won in 2023 were illegitimate.
