Finally took some time to play with #Guitarix and #QJackCtrl to figure out playing through my desktop. Took quite a few browser tabs and pseudo random UI clicks to figure out the connections and then a few more to get the latency down, but unlike in Windows I was finally able to have Youtube and […]
Cassie Robinson, our resident guitar player tries out her new open source recording software. In this pic, she is sitting and posing with her beautiful deep purple Jackson J34Q guitar with its bright natural maple fretboard with black shark fin inlays. Her guitar sits in her lap and she gives the camera her signature smirk as if to say "I am proud of this moment". Off to her left lies her black and red recording interface — her Focusrite Scarlett SOLO 3rd Gen. Cassie's guitar is connected directly to this. No amplifier, no outboard effects processing unit. Next to the unit is her laptop. See the screenshot associated with this post for details on what is here.
This is the screenshot of Mx Robinson's laptop from the previous picture. Here we have Guitarix (a guitar-centric free and open source digital signal processing package of plug-ins and a standalone app) near the top left corner, which takes up about a quarter of her screen, with its lime green and dark grey details, along with various knobs for tuning the sound profile from her guitar. In behind Guitarix is Mx Robinson's patch bay. She is using PipeWire, and she has routed the output from her Scarlett SOLO to Guitarix, and then from Guitarix to her Bluetooth headset. Despite the Bluetooth connectivity, there is minimal latency while she was playing and dialling in her sound. Centre bottom of her screen is a nod to nostalgia, a task bar showing a two-by-two stacked row of apps that she has currently open, with additional virtual screens strategically placed either end of this bar for easy switching between various tasks. Centre top of her screen is a fancy date and time display. The background is an artistic blue, that resembles geometric ice shelves in shades of deep and dark blue to cobalt blue — in keeping with the overall dark theme.
Okay.
It's official.
I am smitten by today's recording tech.

I'm so excited with this new config !
So it's basically full FOSS :
#guitarix / #rakarrak / #sooperlooper / #ardour / #jack / #raysession / #bespokesynth
And... New Standard Tuning for the guitar. I love it !
Here's a raw sample: s.42l.fr/cikVOigt
@ai6yr Hydrogen rules! It takes midi-in as well and you can make your own samples.
Other mature #Linux #musicproduction projects:
#Ardour is a complete DAW. Interface is a B- tops, but it has all the power.
#Guitarix is an effects/"amp-sim" package. Fun for practicing, or making a toy […]

I'm not 100% sure this is what I'll use in #Guitarix, but I'll know more once I get the drums and bass programmed. I'm going for a sound similar to what Keith Richards used on "Satisfaction." #music #guitar
