Photo: A couple of unvarnished wooden chairs rest on a wooden plank deck on the south shore of a lake (Gunflint Lake) in the North Woods, well positioned to look across the lake ... into Canada. The deck is shaded. The lake and the forest covered hills on the opposite shore (Canada) are not.

Photo: A well lit lodge in the North Woods dominates the top half of the frame, glowing yellow at the windows. These interior lights reflect prettily on the lake in the foreground, but they do almost nothing to illuminate the outside, where two visitors find their way along a path between the lake and the lodge by flashlight. On the far left, behind them, a single light pole marks the path they followed from their cabin.

A Paucity of Light
The lives of our ancestors were dominated by darkness. It surrounded them 12 or more hours a day, hiding beasts, bogs and things to trip over. They clung to what light they could produce.
