Dec 25: Santa

Santa’s Slay

Very sad this movie wasn’t exclusively about Fran Drescher dealing with an evil Santa, but I’m grateful for what we got. Enjoyable enough, but some very uneven humor throughout.

Dec 24: Christmas Eve

Amityville Christmas Vacation

This sure is an Amityville movie. (I’ve seen worse, but there’s a very low ceiling on the quality of these movies other than a VERY select few.) It did get a few chuckles out of me, so there’s that.

Dec 22: Cannibal

Cold Meat

It’s never explicitly stated that this is about w*ndigo, but close enough.

This movie was VERY good. For a movie that almost entirely takes place inside a car, the two leads did amazing at keeping up the tension. Highly recommend.

Dec 21: Children

Y2K

“Children” is subjective, but since I’m an old…

What a stacked cast for a movie that was fine. I always love throwbacks to this time, but after how solidly PEN15 nailed the era, I’m just not sure anyone else can come close.

Dec 19: Cabin or Cottage

Barricade

Eric McCormack’s voice is just too distinctive, so I’ll never hear him as anything other than Will. I did like the twist in this even if most of the movie was more of a visual experience rather than story as a result.

Dec 17: Winter Slasher

Silent Night, Deadly Night

Loved this and really want to check out the sequels now (regardless of their quality). I’m sure a lot of this humor wasn’t intentional, but the earnestness made so much of this hilarious. PUNISH!

Dec 15: Animal Attack

The Wolf of Snow Hollow

There were some really interestingly shot sequences here, and the wolf was quite effective in a number of these scares. I also really enjoyed Riki Lindholm in this. Do recommend.

It's getting to the point where seeking a refuge from the world in a 'Cabin or Cottage' could be kinda relaxing.

Prove us wrong with today's #HQAdventCalendar selection!

Dec 13: Hypothermia

Frostbiter: Wrath of the W*ndigo

You say Troma, I push play. Other than the name, doesn’t REALLY fit the prompt, but also this movie absolutely ruled. I’ve never heard so many songs about chili before, but they were all great. A+

For Day 17 of #HQAdventCalendar, we wanna see blood on the snow. What are you watching for the 'Winter Slasher' prompt?

Dec 11: Ski

Avalanche Sharks

Sometimes bad effects are a negative, but they sure helped make this movie memorable. I’m very confused about the sharks that appeared to be inside the hot tub with some of these victims, but it may be better just not to ask. 🫠

FROZEN is the kind of multi-purpose film that fits nearly all of the #HQAdventCalendar prompts, but it suits "Animal Attack" best of all!

Dec 9: Isolation

The Last Winter

V. depressing but quite good. Very reminiscent of The Thing, but quite a different approach to the setting. Regrettable CGI. I know a lot of folks can’t stand movies with no explanations, but the ending here hit just right for me.

Dec 7 (yeah I’m super behind 🥲): Skate

Death Rink

Okay, so it’s not the wintry skating, but this was fine. Very low budget, but I enjoyed the main actor/killer well enough. A little low energy on the kills, but it at least used the setting well for some of them.

We were tempted to go with something more conventional like 30 DAYS OF NIGHT for your 'hypothermia' prompt, but why not try something different...like a Swedish vampire film? #HQAdventCalendar

Your Day 9 prompt for #HQAdventCalendar is Isolation, which isn't often difficult to find in a wintry horror film.

Why not give the (purportedly not great) Kate Beckinsale title, WHITEOUT (2009) a try?

Dec 5: Krampus

Mother Krampus 2: Slay Ride

This gets graded on the low-budget curve, but it was a fun movie. Absolutely zero connection to the first movie, but aside from the 🥴 of the killer reveal, a very pleasantly stupid movie.
