That's a wrap on ACM Hypertext 2025! #ACMHT2025 #HT2025 #HT25
Next year's Hypertext 2026 will be in London at School of Advanced Study at University of London and the British Library. #HT2026
September 8-11, 2026
The theme will be Hypertext as Method.
Presented my paper The Shadow of the Machine (speculations about AI and the future of hypertext) at the NHT workshop at the hypertext conference. You can find the paper and video presentation on my blog: davidmillard.org/2025/09/17/t... #ht25 #nht25
In his #nht25 prez @ #HT25, David Millard (@hoosfoos.bsky.social) ids the parallels between hypertext & those that will come as a result of gen AI. Who controls meaning? What are the boundaries of text? We typically think of AI as an assistant, the human being's still the wordsmith.

🌟 Three powerful presentations. One uniting theme: A changing media landscape demands new questions, new methods, and above all, new voices.
Ganesh, Maria, and Nevena, thank you for preparing us for the #JournalismSpring #HT25 #RISJ

📱 But here’s the shift: Young audiences are online. Nevena explores how TV newsrooms from Brazil to the BBC are rethinking social video — and how Serbia’s legacy media can catch up.
Her takeaway:
If you're not relevant on social… you’re not relevant.
#HT25
Finally we welcomed Nevena Madžarević.📺 She opened with a provocation:
If it’s not on TV, did it really happen? In Serbia, the average person watches 5+ hours of TV daily – but pro-govt channels dominate. Independent stations face major distribution challenges.

📉 Censorship isn’t the only threat. Maria showed how VPNs, fear of surveillance, and reliance on the same analysts can isolate exile outlets.
Her interviews with 7 major Russian exile media reveal a truth: relevance is hard to hold on to, but independent outlets soar when news is breaking.
#HT25
Our next presenter was Maria Kiseleva, a Russian journalist in exile. Her question:
How do you stay relevant when your audience is scattered, censored, or afraid to engage?
She showed us the reality of exile media — and the creative ways they adapt.

🧠 Ganesh shared a six-step checklist for digital video storytelling in rural India: created for young journalists and influencers. From trust-building to platform strategy, this is about more than storytelling.
It’s about shifting power.

🎤 First up: @ganeshpol.bsky.social took us back to his childhood in rural Maharashtra – where radio ruled, TVs arrived in dowries, and rural stories were rarely told.
Tonight he asks:
Whose stories are we telling in rural India? And how are we telling them?

🌸 Spring is blooming in Oxford – and so are new ideas in journalism.
Tonight we hosted the #HT25 @reutersinstitute.bsky.social Fellowship Spring Showcase, where three fellows presented work on Serbia, Russia, and rural India.
