Fun Fact: Bats use their thumbs for climbing. Bats with injured or missing thumbs can be seriously hampered in their daily activities! Their thumb is their only "free" digit! #HappyBaturday

#HappyBaturday! 🦇 Silver-haired Bats are “migratory-hibernators.” They leave Alberta with other migratory bats but are found hibernating elsewhere—exact destinations unknown! Sadly, they’re among the species most often killed at wind energy sites.
Image of a Hoary Bat peering out of the photo looking curious. The bat has a yellow ruff of fur framing a brown and blonde face with brown eyes. Ears are short and round and rimmed with brown (insides are light coloured). The fur is a dark cinnamon colour with white frosted tips (giving the bat its name after "hoar" frost). Text reads Hello! #HappyBaturday! 🦇 Hoary bats are on the move—migrating south in big flocks to unknown wintering grounds. Sadly, many are killed by wind turbines. We need stronger protections! #BatsNeedFriends

The bat is being held in a gloved hand and the image clearly shows the bat up close - with the whole body in the frame of the photo.
#HappyBaturday! Western Small-footed Myotis weigh only 4–5 g & are “at-risk” in Alberta, found along prairie riparian areas & badlands. They eat tiny insects (incl. mosquitoes!) & can be spotted at Dinosaur Prov. Park amphitheatre this summer.

Long-eared Myotis live in prairie rock crevices & mountain tree & rock roosts. They glean moths off surfaces. As a western species, they’re just starting to encounter white-nose syndrome—we're watching closely to see if they will be affected. 🦇

🦇 #HappyBaturday! Once common, Little Brown Myotis in parts of their range, populations have dropped 90–95% due to white-nose syndrome. Bats with WNS have been found in Alberta. Recovery is slow, but bat houses can help! Get free plans & tips here: www.albertabats.ca/bathouses
