Happy Birdtober!
🖤 ʻAlalā (Hawaiian Crow)
Corvus hawaiiensis

The ʻalalā is the comeback story we all love — a smart, social crow with a team dedicated to returning it to its Hawaiian forest home. Let’s cheer on these hopes for its continuing recovery in Hawaiʻi!

Hawaiian Crow That Went Extinct In The Wild Decades Ago Released On Maui
The birds, intelligent and charismatic, are the last survivors of all the Hawaiian crow species. Alalā were last found on Hawaii’s Big Island. They went extinct in the wild in 2002.

ʻAlalā have been extinct in the wild since 2002, when the last pair of wild Hawaiian crows were spotted in South Kona district of Hawaiʻi Island. Luckily, conservationists began an ʻalalā breeding program in the 1970s.
Proceeds support native species protection throughout Hawaiʻi.

Art of the ʻAlalā bird of Hawaii. Though this crow is black I decided to emphasize the colors of bright brown in its coat. The medium is acrylic marker so there is no subtlety in the color transitions. It's a very blocky and visually exciting image.

The crow is leaning over with a stick in its thick beak. It is staring inquisitively ahead. It's a tool using crow so it is probably figuring out how to use its acquired stick in the best way possible for its intended goal.

It's not a full body art of a crow but its head and body until right before its tail and cuts off before its feet. Beside the head of the crow I've written its Hawaiian name: ʻAlalā

It's signed "Finn" "EMG" "Hawaiian" "11/13/23"

Same picture as the one before it except that it shows that it was done on a spiral sketchbook.

#Crowvember Day 13: #HawaiianCrow (ʻAlalā)

I was about to go to bed when I realized I hadn't drawn my crow today.

This is the ʻAlalā aka the Hawaiian Crow. There are none left in the wild.

Still learning acrylic marker. #Struggle
