"The girl she's named after." "Oh," Hawke's voice faltered as her expression fell. "Who is she?" "She's a lot of things. A lot of very complicated things." He had started talking before he knew exactly where to begin. "She's a smith. She's a genius. She created Bianca – the crossbow that is. She's one of a kind." Varric took a deep breath. "We were…involved. Several years ago now. But her parents are Kalnas – Dwarven traditionalists, you know. They never approved of me, and I lost her to an arranged marriage." "I'm sorry, Varric." Hawke's otherworldly silver eyes were brimming with uncharacteristic sincerity. "Don't be. I never deserved her, anyway."

He paused. Hawke waited for him to continue, brows furrowed in focus. "We write letters, and we manage to meet up every once in a while. We risk a clan war every time we do, though." "Do you love her?" Hawkes voice was barely above a whisper. She wasn't asking the easy questions. "I do," Varric confessed. "So, where does that leave us?" "Oh, Varric," she said. She lifted her hand to trail her fingertips along his stubbled jaw. "I don't make any claims over you. You said it was complicated with her? It doesn't have to be with me. I'm here for as long as you want me." "Promise you won't get hitched to some snooty nobleman?" "Do you know how many suitors my mother has thrown at me? And I've never been engaged once." "Of course. No one could ever tie you down. It's what I like about you." "Good," she said, and kissed him.
