We really enjoyed sharing the MRC’s ‘Mining the Past’ project with visitors to the Miners’ Hall, Barnsley, during last week's #HeritageOpenDays - some good new connections made and really useful feedback which will help us to develop new resources and events using the NUM archives

Interior view of the Chester Shot Tower showing a group of visitors wearing white hard hats exploring the historic industrial building. The space features exposed brick walls with weathered red and grey stonework, peeling white paint, and visible structural damage that reveals the building's age and industrial heritage. Adults and children are gathered in the circular chamber, with some looking up at the tower's interior structure. A modern steel support column is visible, along with metal railings and industrial fixtures. The concrete floor and deteriorated walls showcase the raw, authentic character of this rare surviving shot tower, giving visitors a glimpse into Chester's industrial past.

Passers-by may consider this to be a somewhat uninspiring ruin. However, these Roman remains help to define the size, shape & location of the legionary fortress of Deva - from which the present larger circuit of city walls evolved.
