A xaela is at the bottom of a set of stairs in Ishgard, posture suggesting a fall (or in this case, a shove). A raen stands strongly on the stairs above, facial expression difficult to read. -- This wasn't the first time that death had come up as part of his adventure as a WoL, but this was certainly the closest it had ever gotten. Hex had gotten accustomed to brushing it off. He'd started to construct a new sort of belief system based on the one he grew up with in the Dotharl: that those they lost would be reborn, possibly under better circumstances.
Kai, having been in a serious relationship with Haurchefant, was overwhelmed with powerful grief. Though the au ra were allies, a tension swirled between them that Hex wasn't taking any of these terrible and world-altering events seriously; that he was being insensitive to the memories of the lives lost along the way. These feelings exploded when Hex tried to downplay the grief and Kai shoved him, then ran off to isolate. Picking himself up and walking off, Hex had to think about how his attitude had affected others negatively: how mortality and spirituality was varied so deeply, and that these feelings his companions felt weren't weakness - loss weighed heavy, as it should.
He had some time to think about this after the confrontation, and he would emerge from it more mature. He still struggles to see death and loss on the same level as his Eorzean companions (and Kai) but would engage with the others in rituals and actions of mourning, opening himself up to their perspective and changing the weight at which he viewed death and -by extension - life: his included, which he was incredibly reckless with because he'd been seeing himself as good as already dead this whole time.

Harsh words and a shove. Both well-deserved. He'd been insensitive this entire adventure, going from one thrill to the next...but life and its loss weigh heavy, and he'd do well to not forget that.
