The outside of Tonkatsu Shimizu in Kyoto. It's very plain. A white sign with the name written (in Japanese only) and a single lamp above the doorway. The left half of the noren (split curtain) that hangs over the doorway is folded up and over itself, presumably to allow easier access.

Mr Shimizu, proprietor. He is standing behind the counter holding a framing frying pan and looking directly at the camera. He cooks excellent food, slings excellent drinks and provides a genuinely warm welcome. He's also adept at connecting people with one another. He even managed introduced to another freelance journo by the end of the night.

A glass of Suntory lager. From its frosty appearance you can tell it was very cold indeed. In fact there were ice chips floating in it! That's usually a big no-no, as serving so cold kills the beer's taste, but after almost 30 hours of travel this was exactly what I needed.

A dish of fried pork in a soy and sesame sauce. It was delicious.

On my first night in #Kyoto I was taken to Tonkatsu Shimizu. It's a tiny place, very long and narrow, mostly taken up by the bar with just enough room left for a row of stools for customers. It's very much a locals' #bar, and an excellent way to begin my trip to #Japan.
