It's Wednesday again and there's another assault on the news and the police are helpfully listing all the things not-to-do and telling women to walk in pairs until they catch the guy like there's only one predator in town at a time the rain takes a number and waits patiently in line and don't worry, you'll stay safe and dry as long as you follow the rules: You're not safe on the street, so always take the bus You're not safe on the bus, so always take a cab You're not safe in a cab, so stay close to your friends You're not safe with those friends, so never leave your home And you're not safe at home, so live your life alone

A thank you note to Adria Richards I just finished reading your post and I want to thank you for your bravery and for speaking up at a time when it was most needed.  People often get away with incredibly offensive comments just because they can and no one around them says anything either because they agree or because they are too scared to say something.  It’s so difficult to speak up, especially as a woman in a male dominated context, and it gets tiring and exhausting to often be the one person to call people out but, as you have proven, it is SO worth it.  I find the backlash you are receiving truly appalling.  The irony that these guys don’t seem to realize is that by reacting to your experience in this way THEY ARE PROVING YOUR POINT.  Offensive sexist jokes are hurtful and have no place in what is supposed to be a safe space and just because no one says anything or even laughs doesn’t excuse the fact that it was sexist, hurtful and derogatory.
