#HolyoakeLecture
That's a wrap! Thank you to @jamesbloodworth.bsky.social, the 2025 #HolyoakeLecture medallist, and to @felicityhannah.bsky.social for her excellent questions and chairing this evening, and of course, to everyone who joined us in Manchester and online. A great lecture.
Some of the world’s smartest minds are working to keep you online 24/7 – because, as James notes, your attention is what sells. Ultimately, only structural reforms – both political and within the platforms themselves – can curb the unhealthy ways these systems are used. #HolyoakeLecture
Really fascinating Q&A happening right now at the #HolyoakeLecture – spanning from the normalisation of cartoonish masculinity embodied by Donald Trump to the myth that feminism is the problem, when in reality it’s a culture that shames young men for being vulnerable or asking for guidance.
'The lost boys are not lost forever,' James says. 'They’re simply waiting for a world they can fully participate in' – a world that doesn’t villainise them, that recognises their struggles. 'They’re waiting for a society that no longer leaves them behind'.
#HolyoakeLecture
Positive male role models matter – at home, in education, and in local communities. Equally important are meaningful work and genuine opportunities for belonging and upward mobility. In their absence, young men are exposed to online grifters whose primary aim is to exploit them. #HolyoakeLecture
Very much enjoying what James has to say about the manosphere #HolyoakeLecture
The central irony of the manosphere is that it claims to cultivate strength, but in reality it depends on – and amplifies – the very insecurities it exploits, says James. And with social media algorithms pushing ever more extreme content, that cycle only intensifies. #HolyoakeLecture
'Loneliness isn’t just a private misery', says James, 'it’s a void that can all too easily be filled by others'. The manosphere often steps into that space with something dangerously seductive: communities that offer simple, sweeping solutions to complex and societal problems. #HolyoakeLecture
The stage is set for the #HolyoakeLecture! We're due to start in 15 minutes as our audience settles in. Our speaker this evening is journalist and 'Lost Boys' author @jamesbloodworth.bsky.social, chaired by Humanists UK patron and fellow journalist @felicityhannah.bsky.social.
