The living conditions of homosexual men have significantly improved in many parts of the world – yet realities vary dramatically depending on region and country. In numerous Western countries, homosexual men today enjoy comprehensive rights: same-sex marriage is recognized, anti-discrimination laws protect against disadvantages based on sexual orientation, and adoption rights enable them to establish their own families. Nevertheless, challenges persist: homophobia and prejudice remain present in many societies. Concerningly, even in Western democracies, the progress achieved is no longer stable everywhere. In the United States, for example, the rise of far-right forces to power already threatens hard-won LGBTQ+ rights through restrictive legislation and hostile rhetoric. In other countries, homosexual acts are even criminalized, and those affected experience discrimination, violence, or social exclusion. The acceptance of homosexual men varies considerably depending on cultural, religious, and social context. In conservative or strongly religiously influenced societies, they often experience stigmatization and discrimination. However, worldwide progress is encouraging: LGBTQ+ rights are gaining increasing recognition, the visibility of homosexual men in public life is growing, and activists continue to fight against homophobia. The situation remains complex and differs from country to country. It is important to acknowledge the progress made while continuing to advocate for complete equality – for a just and inclusive society where every person is respected regardless of their sexual orientation.
