5/🧵 #Admixture has seldom been detected in #Hawaiian #honeycreepers. We find:
❌ no evidence that ‘ō‘ū 🦜interbred with kiwikiu 🐦
✅ significant evidence of gene flow from Lāna’i ‘ō‘ū 🦜into the Lānai hookbill🐤 (extinct in early 1900s)
highlighting a pre-extinction breeding strategy in this clade

Manu Minute: ʻAlawi, the Hawaiʻi creeper At first glance, it's easy to mistake an ʻalawi for an ʻamakihi. But these little birds have songs that are entirely their own.

Happy #Birdtober!
#Alawi

Found only on Hawaiʻi Island, the ʻalawi #honeycreepers live in high elevation native ʻōhiʻa & koa forests.

They are also known as the Hawaiʻi creeper because they forage by “creeping” up & down branches & tree trunks, using their bills to fleck off bark in search of food.

ʻIʻiwi belong to the Hawaiian honeycreepers, aptly named for their busy movements as they collect nectar from flowers. Once abundant, their long, downward-curved bills are perfectly adapted to fit into the native flowers they visit, facilitating pollination.
