In the foreground, one can see a flowerbed, bordered with low-growing ground cover plants, followed by small perennials and then trees. The vegetation is already quite dense at the beginning of spring, with the trees showing their leaves. Behind the flowerbed, the impressive architecture of the Paris Hôtel de Ville can be seen. Mayor Hidalgo has had a veritable urban forest established on the forecourt. The trees were chosen for their heat resistance. I haven't counted them myself, but there are said to be 49 trees in total.
The new greening of the vast square in front of the Hotel de Ville has been a success: Where there was only a barren expanse of paving stones two years ago, there are now trees, shrubs, flowers, insects—and birds.
