Illustration of twin tiefling brothers framed by an illuminated manuscript style border. The border contains pieces of their family's heraldry; a dragon skull, wolves, spears, yew branches, a pomegranate pierced by a knife. Markos, dressed in his priest garb, tries to hold Stavros close, which obscures his halo. Part of Stavros's skull is exposed as his body dissolves into black whisps and covers Markos.

After taking a short rest, the Durangos discussed their approach going forward. It had become obvious that they were dealing with devils rather than the demons mentioned in the missive, so they decided they would attempt negotiating. Due to Claudia and the twins having obvious affiliation with the Church of Helm, Dorian was elected to take the lead in the negotiation. Dorian was worried, as he was less schooled on the nature of fiends, but Stavros promised he would assist.

Continuing forward, they entered the throne room and were met by a Rakshasa. The finely dressed fiend greeted them and asked for an introduction, which Dorian hesitated to give as he briefly confused Fey and Fiends rules. With Stavros's encouragement, Dorian continued with the conversation.

The finely dressed fiend greeted them and asked for an introduction, which Dorian hesitated to give as he briefly confused Fey and Fiends rules. With Stavros's encouragement, Dorian continued with the conversation.

The Rakshasa introduced himself as Kizomok and revealed that the devils were there due to a broken deal, seeking to right a wrong. He promised that they had no interest in the Keep itself and that it would be returned to the possession of the city in due time. Stavros questioned if Lady Salmathon was the one that had struck the deal in question, which Kizomok confirmed but said he could not divulge the details of the deal. The Durangos were able to trade the knowledge they had about the House D'Antheus plan to raze the Keep in order to confirm that Prince Haldir was the source of the conflict. Kizomok revealed that Lady Salmathon had a claim to Prince Haldir and that Earl Torryn Lomassal had gone to great lengths to deny that claim.

After deciding they would not get much more information out of Kizomok, they asked permission to continue exploring the Keep on their own. Kizomok wanted assurance that they would not be working against Lady Salmathon and would be looking for ways to uphold her contract. Stavros said that they would, although he was careful not to say anything specific until they could learn the exact wording of the contract. He mused a bit out loud about changing the circumstances enough to find a loophole in the deal, even possibly at the expense of the Earl, but not within earshot of Kizomok.

Despite trying their best to be convincing, they could not get Kizomok to agree. Instead, he summoned several Spine Devils, Imps, and Hell Hounds, before disappearing from the room.

The Durangos were instantly trapped in another battle, this one much more difficult than the last one. Stavros tried to block the door to the throne room with his body to prevent the Imps and additional Hell Hounds from entering. The Imps turned into spiders to crawl into the room but Stavros was able to slice one spider right in half. The Spined Devils flew up to the top of the throne room’s high ceiling to attack from a distance and were able to knock Claudia unconscious. Markos was also taken down by one of the Hell Hounds. Dorian turned invisible, took cover behind the throne itself and began focusing on support healing. The situation had become dire quickly.

There were several rounds of Markos, Stavros and Claudia getting knocked unconscious and being brought back (mostly by Dorian). At one point, Markos came back to consciousness to Stavros and Dorian debating what they were going to tell House D'Antheus after they escaped. He yelled at them to worry about the optics LATER and focus on surviving.

Several brutal rounds of combat later, the Durango siblings were able to scrap out a victory. Claudia channeled the Divinity of Helm for the first time, granting everyone much needed healing, and they were able to dispatch the last of the fiends. Dorian, once again overtaken by violent urges, crushed the final Spined Devil into the stone floor. Exhausted and battered, the Durangos made camp in the foyer of the Keep and rested.

Dorian and Stavros approached the soldiers of House D'Antheus to question them further on the situation. The soldiers indicated that they had been enforcing the barricade and advising Captain Thrawl on burning down the Keep. House D’Antheus had no interest in trying to save the missing prince and believed it was time to cut the city's losses, allowing a cousin of Earl Lomassal to take the throne instead. Stavros insulted the knights as being cowardly, as they had not risked their own safety at all and seemed eager to assume the prince was lost. Stavros and Dorian were extremely angered by the exchange–resolving that the Durangos would simply have to go into the Keep themselves to kill everything inside, rescue the prince, and prove the House D’Antheus soldiers wrong.

Before entering the Keep, Stavros suggested that they try to stock up on some potions due to Dorian and Claudia’s lack of fire resistance. They entered a nearby Apothecary but quickly remembered they were, in fact, quite poor. Stavros tried to get a discount on account of going to rescue the prince and managed to afford one potion of fire resistance and one potion of fire breath. Dorian took the fire resistance potion and Stavros kept the fire breath potion for himself.

After preparing themselves as best they could, Captain Thrawl wished the Durangos well and escorted them through the barricade and to the entry of the Keep. The siblings entered the darkened Keep in a little line, with Stavros at the front, then Markos, Dorian, and Claudia at the end. They could hold tails in a cute chain if they wanted. Markos pre-emptively applied his Rite of Dawn to his sword to cast a bit of light and Stavros immediately healed him with a Lay of Hands in a very practiced fashion.

The entryway was a bit scorched but otherwise in one piece. The siblings began looking around to investigate and Stavros curiously knocked on the door to the next room. Instantly the sounds of screeching and growling erupted from the other side of the door. Several Devils and Hell Hounds burst into the room and attacked. The twin’s natural fire resistance came in handy as they preoccupied the Hell Hounds and directed the monsters’s fire breath towards themselves instead of Dorian and Claudia. Meanwhile, Claudia was shooting off guiding bolts and Dorian dodging imps with his invisibility and shocking grasp.

The battle moved into the hallway as the Hell Hounds were difficult creatures to kill. Dorian picked off the remaining imps and Claudia tried to use her moon chakram spiritual weapon, but was knocked unconscious by a Hound immediately after she summoned it. :( The twins were able to flank the remaining Hell Hounds and lay into them with their combined Radiant damage. Dorian got Claudia picked back up off the floor and finished off the last Hound with his shocking grasp.

Dorian made it through the entire fight without taking a single hit, but the rest of the siblings were a bit roughed up. They decided to barricade the rooms they had cleared out to take a bit of time to recover. They rummaged through the cupboards, but all four had terrible luck and only found a handful of candies.

After composing themselves, the Durangos were flooded with all of the memories they had forgotten. They remembered they had come to this town to find Sir Ponli and Roks. Searching the area, they recovered Sir Ponli’s chewed up helmet. :(

Returning to the town square, the siblings found that a mob had formed outside of the city hall. The remaining townspeople expressed a mixture of grief and anger and appeared to be directing it all at the mayor. The Acolyte, Jodie, explained that the killings began a month prior and that the mayor was the only one who had not lost any family members to the monster. As the mob began to escalate, Dorian and Stavros interrupted by getting everyone’s attention and tossing one of the False Hydra’s heads to the ground.

As the mob began to escalate, Dorian and Stavros interrupted by getting everyone’s attention and tossing one of the False Hydra’s heads to the ground.

The mayor immediately tried to claim that he had sent a letter to the city of Ortollas for help, which the Durangos had provided at his request. The siblings, immediately suspicious, noted that they had only come to town for groceries and not in response to any summons. They questioned further, catching the mayor in more lies. The Innkeeper revealed that the mayor had been embezzling and that he was going to be held accountable before the killings started. The Durangos muscled their way into the city hall to investigate these embezzlement claims. After a bit of searching in the mayor’s desk, they uncovered an item that Markos instantly recognized as a hag totem. The mayor had made a deal with a hag to get rid of his political opponents to avoid being held accountable, resulting in the summoning of the False Hydra.

The mayor tried to make a run for it but was easily apprehended by Stavros. He was handed over to a Knight of House Kettle to face trial. Claudia turned her attention to the other needs of the townspeople and decided to send word to her Church to request support–provide funeral rites, recovery funds, etc.

As everything was wrapping up, Dottie appeared with Roks im tow behind her. Roks admitted that he had gone back to camp on the first night and never realized he was in any danger. Dorian scooped both of the kobolds up in a big hug, overwhelmed with relief. Everyone returned to camp and Dottie was finally able to make her stew.

The next morning, the Durangos continued their journey to Carthage. On the road, Dorian admitted that he did not remember his burst of violence at the end of the False Hydra fight and blacked out for a little bit. Concerned, Stavros asked that Dorian inform them if his head felt fuzzy again. Markos asked Claudia how she was doing, as this was not the sort of adventure she could have been expecting when she introduced herself to them. Claudia said that she felt alive for the first time, which was both good and bad.

After two more days of travel, with the city of Carthage within sight, they encountered an imp on the road. The imp stated that it was going to let Lady Salmathon know she had visitors coming and flew away.

Entering the city, the Durangos found all of the guards on high alert and run absolutely ragged. The Captain of the Ward, Bellisarius Thrawl, explained that three weeks prior there was a commotion within the Keep. Shortly after, the Keep went up in flames and then demons began pouring out of it. The Earl Lomassal and his young son, Haldir, went missing during the chaos. Since then, the guards had been holding a perimeter around the Keep, and anyone that had tried to go in to investigate had not come back out.

Additionally, soldiers from House D'Antheus, The Grand Dukedom of Lodross, had arrived in the city just days after the problems began and were offering only tertiary support. The City Ward seemed frustrated they were not doing more to directly assist with the demon issue.

The Durangos decided to gather a bit more information before attempting to approach the Keep (due to the whole ‘people going in and never coming back out’ bit). They were directed to speak to the Seneschal of House Lomassal, Baylee Thomas, as she had been inside the Keep when the fire broke out. Baylee recounted that on the evening of the fire, she had heard raised voices between the Earl and an unknown woman. After some urging from Dorian, she admitted it was not the first time she had heard the unknown voice. She also revealed that Earl Lomassal had never taken a wife and the appearance of his heir, Prince Haldir, was an unexplained mystery.

The next morning, the siblings awoke with no memories of the horrors they witnessed the night before. Claudia, at first, appeared to be feeling under the weather (possibly due to failing too many Wisdom savings throws :p). The brothers made sure she was bundled up and prepared some hot tea for her, giving her many kisses on the forehead. However, she quickly recovered and had to untangle herself from the blankets they had piled on. Stix snuck a bit of her tea.

The Durangos headed back into town to do their long overdue grocery shopping and continue searching for Roks. After a brief debate on how many onions and potatoes they needed, the siblings heard the shopkeeper say he had “faces in the dark” waiting for him back at the inn. The shopkeeper insisted that he never said that.

As they exited the shop, Markos was struck by a strange compulsion to write and reasoned that he should send a letter ahead to Cartharge, letting the High Priest at his Monastery know that they were on their way to assist with the demon attacks. As Markos stopped to pen his message, Dorian was approached by one of the many orphaned children in the square, who asked if he had seen the “faces in the dark.” Only Dorian heard him say this, everyone else heard the child asking for money. Meanwhile, Stavros was drawn towards the empty tailor shop. Stavros felt as though he had left something inside the shop, despite having no memory of ever entering it.

Stavros entered the shop, once again finding the bloody sleeve and seeing the message IT ATE HIM scratched into the countertop.

Markos continued to write his letter, but soon realized he was not in control of his hand. He was repeatedly writing “faces in the dark,” over and over again. He frantically called for Stavros, who rushed out of the tailor’s shop and knocked the paper and pen out of his hand. Stavros reported what he saw inside the shop and all of the siblings agreed that something was VERY wrong with this town and to head to the town hall to try to get some answers.

As they passed the fountain in the town square, Stavros stuck his hand in the dirty water and stole four copper pieces. Markos disapproved.

Suddenly, Claudia–who had been trailing along behind the others–was grabbed by her leg and dragged into the surrounding underbrush. Her brothers chased the sound of her screams deeper into the forest, where they discovered the three headed False Hydra surrounded by bones and discarded items from previous victims. Claudia managed to free herself from the bite on her leg and all four siblings began battling the horrific creature.

Markos, who was closest to Claudia, was attacked first. The False Hydra tore into him, critically injuring him and leaving him at just 1 HP. Markos reacted with his Hellish Rebuke and managed to scorch one of its heads. Realizing this monster was not resistant to fire, the siblings used all of the fire attacks they had to burn it and prevent it from growing MORE heads.

Dorian kept giving Stavros his Bardic Inspiration to help him Divine Smite the shit out of the monster.

The Durangos come to their senses standing in an unfamiliar Tailor's shop, confused as to why they entered the shop and concerned as to why Stavros was holding a bloodied dagger. As they looked around, beg we're disappointed to find the clothing in the shop to be of low quality ... Or at least a far cry from the finery they were accustomed to as nobles. The twins quickly begin suggesting to Claudia that she upgrade her wardrobe to match her new status. Markos had gotten many of his clergy robes commissioned over the years and advised her to do the same. Stavros pointed out that just because Claudia was a woman of the cloth didn't mean that cloth had to be rags. Claudia thought her clothes were fine >:(

Dorian pointed out a strange message carved into the countertop reading “IT ATE HIM” with more blood around it. Confused and disconcerted by what they might have just walked into, they followed the blood trail toward the back of the tailor shop and out the back. Stavros cleaned his bloody dagger off on one of the ugly garments as they went. As they exited the back of the shop, they heard another strange song and everyone, except for Claudia, forgot the message on the counter. Claudia, baffled that her brothers suddenly wanted to go grocery shopping, tried to describe the blood and head pain they had experienced. Stavros mistook her description, and in an attempt to be supportive, inquired if she was referring to her ‘time of the month’. Dorian stepped in immediately, as he had prior experience with such things and wanted to offer remedy advice. Markos, embarrassed by the entire exchange, quickly walked away.

Markos approached a villager to inquire about groceries and Roks, and they were told Roks was last seen entering the tailor’s shop. Claudia tried desperately to get her brothers to remember the frightening situation they were investigating, getting increasingly frustrated as they were unable to recall anything at all. She convinced them to investigate the tailor’s shop again, but just as they started to make progress, Stavros once again forgot everything. Claudia was at her wits end!!! Suddenly, Claudia is called by a familiar voice and she sees a horrible pale face inside the tailor’s shop. It was vaguely human, but smiling too wide, with sunken black eyes, and attached to a long white neck. It tried to compel Claudia to enter the shop again, but Claudia was able to resist.

Dorian pointed out a strange message carved into the countertop reading “IT ATE HIM” with more blood around it. Confused and disconcerted by what they might have just walked into, they followed the blood trail toward the back of the tailor shop and out the back. Claudia FREAKED out, barely able to communicate the terrible thing she saw. Stavros was beyond confused, but seeing that his sister was so distraught, he offered a prayer and blessing. They held hands while Stavros said a prayer to Helm and cast a protective spell.

Night began to fall, the day moving very quickly since the party kept forgetting what was going on. The Durangos decided to approach the nearby Church of Helm to request a place to stay the night. They introduced themselves to the local Acolyte, Jodie, who noted that the town had not had a priest assigned to them in twenty years. They were invited to stay the night and Jodie prepared a small stew for them. Claudia was quick to assist.

After setting up a room to sleep, the siblings took turns keeping watch. It began to storm outside. During Stavros’s watch, while he was cleaning his weapons, he noticed a hint of dried blood on his dagger. Then, the same pale face Claudia saw in the tailor’s show appeared outside the window. Stavros immediately alerted his siblings to what he saw, but by the time they woke up, it was gone. Shaken, Markos took the next watch. Dorian was too afraid to go back to sleep. Suddenly, faces appear at ALL the windows in the room and a song fills the air.

All four siblings forget what they saw.

Heraldry for House Durango:

A shield with a dragon skull and two lances is flanked on both sides by wolves. Atop the shield is a pomegranate split open to show the seeds with the Eye of Helm shining above it. Flourishes of yew branches around the shield and wolves with red berries among the leaves. Beneath the shield and wolves is a banner that reads "virtus in actione consistit," meaning "Virtue Lies In Action."

The skull is of Brezenothakior, the dragon that Carlisle Durango slayed to secure his name as Duke of Wintertop and the origin of the Durango family heritage. The lances are for the Wintertop Dragoons, the lancers who protect the northern reaches of Oskania. The pomegranate stands for the sacrament of Helm, the seed of life from holy light, the rebirth of spring. The yew branches stand for death of those that oppose the Kingdom, and healing to those that protect Oskania. The wolves of Wintertop stand for the untamable force of nature, the warriors of winter, to remember to respect the threats in the lands and to not fall to hubris. "Virtue Lies In Action" honors Carlisle's feat in slaying Brezenothakior and his refusal to back down in the face of adversity. The Eye of Helm watches down in vigilance, along with Helm's Dogma guiding the peoples of Wintertop to strive for truth, diligence, and patience.

The next morning, the siblings prepared to leave for Carthage to help the noble house, Lomassal, with a demon attack. (Dorian had to sneak out of Ruven’s house to join them before breakfast.) Lord Godfrey, in an act of solidarity with House Durango, offered the service of one of his knights to the Durangos–Sir Ponli Hercule.

Before leaving Elesgiah, Stavros stopped by a local Goldsmith to pick up a commissioned order he had placed the day before. He paid for a pair of gold adornments for his (and Markos’s) fangs, but did not have the money for a second larger order. He lied that he simply needed to retrieve the additional funds from the family coffers and would return with payment (he’s hoping the mission in Carthage pays well). The Durangos are poor now…

Once they were on the road, Sir Ponli IMMEDIATELY got on the siblings' nerves. He didn’t seem to be malicious, but foolish and full of himself and ANNOYINGGG. Markos constantly had to remind the siblings that they needed to be diplomatic, as Sir Ponli’s service was part of their alliance with Lord Godfrey, but even he was close to snapping.

After two days of traveling, they camped near a small town by the name of Rookhallow. Dottie needed to do a bit of shopping for dinner, and so when Sir Ponli volunteered to walk into town for her, the siblings were more than happy to let him go. They sent Roks along to accompany him as well.

Several hours passed, but the pair did not return.

The siblings begrudgingly headed into town to search for their lost knight and sorcerer supreme, believing them to be kidnapped. They entered the local tailor shop and found a woman that appeared like she had recently been crying. As they inquired about Sir Ponli, the woman began to scratch on the wood of the counter, slowly craving out letters. She appeared to be oblivious to her own actions, carrying on a normal conversation while her nails cracked and bled. Eventually she carved the words IT ATE HIM. Before any of the siblings could react, she reached over the counter, grabbed Stavros’s dagger, and cut her own hand off. She then began to scream.

They all left town in the morning, were accompanied by the most annoying knight in the world, and had a totally normal one at a tailor's shop!

That evening, the Durangos arrived at the largest tavern in town in the nicest finery available to them. Stavros bought a round of mead for everyone and introduced Liesl to his siblings. Claudia was completely overwhelmed by the party atmosphere of the tavern, but Stavros hauled her out onto the dancefloor to try to get her to have fun. Claudia, drunk, cried on Stavros’s shoulder about a failed relationship from her days at the convent and Stavros consoled her (and offered to beat up this unnamed ex). Markos prodded Liesl for stories about Stavros while they were training together with the Vigilant Eyes and she divulged the most embarrassing ones she could think of. Dorian persuaded his way into the VIP section by charming a minor noble, Ruven Godrick, and went home with him.

It was agreed that they would deliver a copy to Lord Godfrey, confirm their selection of the King’s missives, and inform him of the black dragon that Dorian spotted in the city. Dorian tried to get additional information about how he was found as a baby in an egg from Dottie, but she had little more knowledge to offer. Lord Godfrey was deeply troubled by the news of the dragon sighting, worried that the fall of Wintertop had already spurred the dragons to begin encroaching on Elesgiah. The siblings also learned that Lord Godfrey had trained as a Paladin before he had to abandon his training to take over ruling the city. He noted that his status as a noble was the only reason he was not considered an Oathbreaker. Lord Godfrey and Stavros concluded the meeting with a Paladin salute. Learning this solidified Stavros's respect for Lord Godfrey.

Stavros was eager to have his siblings meet Liesl and invited them all out to the tavern later that night, after they had completed their errands for the day. Markos and Claudia stopped by the nearest library to attempt a bit of research. Markos was seeking more information on local legends about the Black Knight they saw before Ingelokastamazilion destroyed Wintertop, while Claudia wanted to research demons to better prepare for their mission in Carthage, but both of them just ended up becoming absorbed in reading salacious fiction instead.
