Now that we have spent the last week helping neighbors, we are feeling totally overwhelmed with the gravity of our own mess of twisted trees, destroyed dog pens and undermined stone patios. The amount of work ahead is just staggering. #HurricaneHelene2024
Out of state line crews have arrived and are staging equipment to start repairs in our small community. Most main roads have been cleared of debris. #HurricaneHelene2024
One of our neighbors walked over this evening to give us this lovely card. TigWolf and I spent two days cutting trees down on her private road so she and other elderly neighbors could access the main road. #HurricaneHelene2024
Leaky hydraulic cylinder rebuild today. Deere has been working hard this week clearing trees in our neighborhood. #HurricaneHelene2024
It's very heart warming to receive messages like this as TIgWolf and I work tirelessly helping our small community. #HurricaneHelene2024
A sincere thank you to the following people who have kindly donated to our GoFundMe. We have been assisting neighbors with cutting trees away, delivering water, food and fuel, and these funds will go towards helping them and our small community even further. #HurricaneHelene2024
Pathways are slowly being cut through all the fallen trees here in our area to make way for electric crews. We are still busy helping our neighbors with tree removal and water delivery since many do not have generators. #HurricaneHelene2024

[...] All McFarland employees are safe and accounted for as of this morning. Our offices came through Helene intact and power has been restored. Once our water supply returns, hopefully within a day or two, we’ll reopen the office, warehouse and book factory. The other good news is that the water receded quickly after the fast-moving, violent flooding. Our county, Ashe, is among those hardest hit in the North Carolina mountains. Severe flooding swept away many bridges, cut through or obliterated innumerable stretches of roads, inundated homes and businesses, even washed away some homes entirely. Trees are down all through our area, taking power lines with them. The crews pouring in to do repairs are struggling to reach damaged areas with so many roads destroyed or undercut by flood waters. Most of McFarland’s staff are affected, with a large percentage presently unable to work at home or reach the office. We won’t be operating at full strength this week, it’s safe to say [...]
My publisher, McFarland, is located in an area heavily hit by #HurricaneHelene2024 - they gave me the ok to share their statement on how they are impacted. So fellow author friends who publish with McFarland, or folks placing orders, check it out:
The shelves were pretty empty after waiting in queue this morning at the only grocery store open in our area. The remaining bags of popcorn must be pretty bad, if people are passing it by even during an emergency ;) #HurricaneHelene2024
Here is a power outage map, showing just how wide spread the damage to our infrastructure is from #HurricaneHelene2024
All those in the hurricane path, prepare now and get to a safe place.
