Whelp I did it. Blew up a tantalum capacitor on a 5150. Got sparks, smoke, and all.

For the final day of #DOScember 2025 here is part 4 of my #IBM5150 restore series. With lots of help from the community, I try to trace down what IC(s) are keeping the board from booting.
Happy Janky New Year! IBM 5150 will return!

Something seems off with the AMD 8088 CPU at U3 on my #IBM5150 that I am trying to restore for #DOScember.
Pin 22 Ready should go HIGH when the CPU is ready to start executing code. The view on the oscilloscope shows high then low. Not good.

One final #DOScember 2025 video in the works. Stay tuned. 🎄🎁

Merry Jankmas! I'm trying to have a little #DOScember fun working on my #IBM5150 motherboard.
I keep getting an error from my T48 EPROM programmer that I need to install an adapter.
What the heck am I doing wrong?

In Part 3 of my IBM 5150 restoration series for #DOScember, I check for the 4.77MHz clock signal on the motherboard and give it a ultrasonic bath.
(Sorry about the choppy audio, not sure what went wrong.)

an IBM 5150 with the case open is on the left. A 5151 monitor sits on the carpet to the right. the text in the screen is the MS-DOS welcome banner from my DOS 3.3 master.
Well, I had the dip switches set incorrectly and it was trying to test memory that didn't exist. Fixed that and the floppy drives seem to work as well...
I'm also impressed that the Dell System 200 DOS 3.3 Master disk (circa 1987) is still working.

As a surprise follow up to my #IBM5150 restore series Part 2, I made a short video of a power on test waiting for a few minutes to see if Big Blue makes a beep.
Thanks to @gloriouscow.bsky.social for the suggestion.

Working on an #IBM5150 for #DOScember. Using MinusZeroDegrees.net for tips. PSU is good (stays on when plugged into board), no beep from speaker.
No obvious damage, no exploding caps, & voltages look good coming off PSU at P8 & P9 connectors. Is T1 trimmer ok?

Image titled “Throwback Thursday – The original PC, the IBM 5150.” The background shows a warm, soft desert sand scene with the text in a classic brown serif font. At the center, an IBM 5150 personal computer is shown — consisting of a beige desktop unit with two black floppy disk drives, a separate CRT monitor stacked on top, and a full-size beige mechanical keyboard attached by a coiled cable. Caption text at the bottom reads: “This was the machine that put the ‘IBM PC’ in ‘IBM PC-compatible’ and started the home computer revolution; it made IBM, Microsoft, Intel, and Bill Gates household names; and it brought computing into more homes and offices than any computer manufacturer before.” At the bottom right corner is the vintage.computer logo.
Meet the machine that started it all: the IBM 5150, released in 1981. It defined the term “IBM PC-compatible,” launched the home computer revolution, and made IBM, Microsoft, and Intel household names. #VintageComputing #IBM5150 #RetroTech #ComputerHistory #VintageComputer
Black-and-white photo of a boy wearing glasses, sitting at a desk and looking thoughtfully at an old IBM personal computer with a monochrome monitor and floppy disk drives. Overlaid text reads: “FROM BLINKING CURSORS TO PARALLEL ARCHITECTURES. We’ve come a long way. FLOW.” Photo credit: Bundesarchiv / Engelbert Reineke, 1988.
Not all revolutions are loud. Some start w/ a blinking cursor on a beige screen. Tomorrow marks 44 years since #IBM5150 made a turning point. It didn’t just introduce the personal computer. It reshaped how we think about access, architecture, & scale. @ibmmuseum.bsky.social #IBMPCDay #TechPioneers

This looks off without a 5151, 5153/5154, or 5175 (modded for VGA). Even an Amdek from the era would be good.
🤞one day!🤞
At least it works. Final (for now) video soon.
Also, as flimsy as it looks, the desk is doing its best!

Realized I didn't have a #DOScember video this year, so started one. Working on the #IBM5150 I picked up a while ago.
Just mine, or are all 5150 PSU's secured with random screws and bolts? motherboard is a 64/256 variant.
Mine has slotted, Phillips hex screws (for the PSU mount), and hex bolts...
Un modelo anterior, el 5100 fue fabricado en 1975 y tenía todas las características de una PC moderna, pero nunca se comercializó a usuarios
