To the Senators and Representatives of the 119th Congress, 2nd Session: On January 7th, an ICE officer in Minneapolis shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, an American citizen and mother exercising her constitutional rights. Following her death, an ICE shooting in Portland left two people injured in a parking lot. Last year, 32 people died in ICE custody, making it the agency’s deadliest year in over two decades, as this administration intensifies efforts to detain and deport a record number of individuals. Now, Secretary Noem has quietly changed DHS policy again to prevent representatives from inspecting detention centers or speaking with detainees without approval. What are we running now, Gulags? ICE has gone rogue, and you allow it. We insist that you represent us—not Trump, not the oligarchs, not yourselves, but us, the people who elected you. Elections are approaching, and we know what to do — do you? Here’s a reasonable start for immigration reform: defund DHS, cut ICE and CBP budgets, and make it illegal for ICE and all federal agents to continue domestic terrorism campaigns. Pass laws to ban stopping and detaining people based on appearance or language. Ensure ICE and CBP agents are held accountable under all laws for actions causing death; federal agents have no immunity. Prohibit state and local law enforcement from participating in or protecting immigration enforcement efforts, as they are hired to serve communities, not federal agents.
