THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE (2025, Fastvold, ***1/2) Condolences to THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES for no longer being the coolest movie that takes place in Niskayuna. #IFFBoston
IS THIS THING ON? (2025, Cooper, **1/2) I have so many questions. Not a confusing film per se, but one full of creative choices I found completely perplexing. For starters, Peyton Manning? #IFFBoston
NO OTHER CHOICE (2025, Park, **1/2) Probably goes without saying that this is gorgeously shot and cut together but I also found it boringly glib and the wacky slapstick pratfalls strenuously unfunny. #IFFBoston
RENTAL FAMILY (2025, Hikari, *1/2) Haven’t we already seen a wet-eyed Brendan Fraser blubbering enough for one lifetime? #IFFBoston
LEFT-HANDED GIRL (2025, Tsou, ***1/2) “Fish have no wisdom. So dumb.” #IFFBoston
LA GRAZIA (2025, Sorrentino, ***1/2) Toni Servillo smoking cigarettes = cinema. #IFFBoston
KONTINENTAL ‘25 (2025, Jude, ***) The least vulgar and most conventional film I’ve seen from him yet. I liked it fine, but prefer a little more outrageousness with my outrage. Great PERFECT DAYS joke, though. #IFFBoston
BLUE MOON (2025, Linklater, ****) A delightful movie about discovering that you’ve grown old and irrelevant, drank too much, no longer understand what the audience wants and you’re never gonna have sex with Margaret Qualley. It resonated with me for several reasons. #IFFBoston
THE MASTERMIND (2025, Reichardt, ***1/2) Has the most amusingly clumsy robbery I’ve seen in some time. But what else would you expect from a heist movie set in Framingham? #IFFBoston
highlight of my #IFFBoston experience: bypassing Tom Stern post-Q&A at the THE HOLE TRUTH screening, heading over to Gibby Haynes, shaking his hand, and thanking him for all of the music. I'd rather talk to the organ grinder than the monkey.
and now to get my piece about the fest filed.
also realizing now that I misgendered them in my dumb little review blurb of their wonderful film, so
SORRY, BABY: ****1/2. "The perfect length."
#IFFBoston
SORRY, BABY was moving and funny; some deadpan, awkward humor is always right up my alley. Excellent choice for a closing night film. #IFFBoston
2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA is riveting. It's been awhile since a movie ended and the audience was sitting in stunned silence #IFFBoston
DEAF PRESIDENT NOW was excellent and I'm glad it's already been picked up by Apple so friends will be able to see it before too long #IFFBoston
REBEL WITH A CLAUSE was excellent. Fun and quick, you kind of love everyone involved. #IFFBoston
ZODIAC KILLER PROJECT Is a fun deconstruction of the modern "True Crime" documentary. It is an excellent pairing with PREDATORS from earlier in the festival. #IFFBoston
ZODIAC KILLER PROJECT (*** out of 4) Brechtian true crime documentary that takes the piss out of Netflix's docuseries decadence. #IFFBoston
STOLEN KINGDOM was a great look into the Disney exploration and black market scene. Tight and good interviews and contemporary and old footage from those involved. #IFFBoston
On this day in 2014, our V66 documentary had its World Premiere at the @iffboston.bsky.social for a packed audience at Somerville Theatre! It was one of our greatest film festival screenings ever and this year's IFFBoston is happening right now! #V66 #OnThisDay #IFFBoston
BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUTT was unlike so many modern band/album docs…. It moved quickly, had tons of great, varied interview subjects, fun interstitial and recreations, etc. Super fun. #IFFBoston
MOOCH is a fun comedic take on noir private detective. Was exactly what I needed after several serious docs… #IFFBoston #CentralJerseyIsAMyth
FREE LEONARD PELTIER dove deep into a subject I knew very little about. The story is riveting, inspiring and infuriating, and told quite well. #IFFBoston
COSMIC CODA had a nice blend of science and a "day in the life" of the subject scientists. Could have been mega dry but was good. #IFFBoston
PREDATORS was excellent. A look into our cultural obsession with "True Crime" (by way of "To Catch a Predator" and what it means about us. #IFFBoston
The subject of MISTRESS DISPELLER was fascinating, but I was left with so many questions unanswered and the slow motion pans and drone shots between scenes. #IFFBoston
Settled in at MISTRESS DISPELLER to start day 2 at #iffboston
The opening night film of #IFFBoston, COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT, ripped my guts out but also filled me back up. Highly recommended.
Keytar Bear on stage at the Somerville
Excited to see Keytar Bear onstage at the opening night of #iffboston!!
