I encountered this Bursaria truncatella after it "inhaled" a Paramecium. I was hoping to see the Paramecium get sealed into a vacuole, but instead it finally managed to escape! My students have nicknamed Bursaria "Micro Roomba." LOL

Allowing students to take control of scientific investigations helps them feel like they are “doing” science, rather than science just being something that they learn about. 🧑🔬
Here are some ways to design projects that are truly student-led.

Never seen the death of a ciliate like this-- usually it's too much pressure from the coverslip or too much osmotic pressure. But this gradual posterior-to-anterior "unzipping" effect amazed me !

Had a blast last week at the @nabtbio.bsky.social national conference & got to present to several dozen Bio teachers about the #Microsafaris you have seen here over time. Even did a live demo & captured this elegant Stentor showing off for those awesome teachers! #iteachbiology #microscopy #Edusky
This science teacher’s student engagement strategy didn’t just transform his own classroom—it connected AP Bio teachers from across the country!

“A tremendous amount of valuable scientific observation can occur with what is overlooked all around us. There is magic in the mundane if we teach students to pay close attention to what is nearby.” 🪄🍁

From a desktop "mini pond" I maintain just for kicks --- Love the internal detail of the Aeolosoma as it wanders around. Also notice some blue microplastic and a stentor.

From a Texas pond - I love seeing Urocentrum turbo doing its thing here. Amazed they have enough energy to keep on spinning without obviously feeding like other species of ciliates. ENJOY!

It's always nice when you see a nauplius that isn't hell-bent on zooming everywhere. LOL
*For my non-bio friends, a nauplius is a larval form of a crustacean. I suspect this one belongs to the genus Cyclops - a copepod.

Just saw this recently deceased copepod with a hefty load of peritrich epibionts (I think Vorticella). Excited to see the egg sac with eggs that already have eyes developing. It's my first time observing this!

Yesterday I collected some samples from a local Texas pond and was happy to see a bunch of Nauptili. I thought y'all might appreciate this video of one of them -- apologies for a messy condenser --- that gets cleaned this weekend!

Scope Skills Checklist from teacher Shawn Sutton. I can safely carry a microscope by the arm and base to my table. I can safely place a slide by the edges of the glass on the stage. I can point the scanning objective down. I can bring the stage all the way down using the coarse adjustment knob. I can bring my eye to the eyepiece. I can slowly bring the slide into focus by turning the coarse adjustment knob. I can change the viewing lens to low power objective. I can focus my image using the fine adjustment knob. I can take the slide off, point the scanning objective down, and bring the stage all the way down before returning my microscope.
Less repeating instructions. More independent, hands-on learning in science class!

“When we teach science the way it works, in context, in connection, students don’t just learn more, they remember it, apply it, and start asking better questions that lead to even more connections.” 🐇
