get housing
get land
get into the community
get to vote
get Nation acceptance
have political power

#Canadian Federal #IndianStatus and community recognition aren’t the same, and access to resources reflects political and legal structures more than ancestry or culture. #FNMI
For the record, I honor the rejection of #IndianStatus under the #IndianAct. It doesn’t define me or my relationship to community, culture, and ancestry mean far more than #colonial definitions. #FNMI
The reality: I have federal #IndianStatus, but I’ve never qualified for funding #Kahnawake receives. The community decides who benefits, and their membership rules don’t even follow traditional #matrilineal protocols so federal recognition, community benefits, and traditional law all don’t line up.
Funny paradox: I have federal #IndianStatus, so I qualify for government “benefits,” but #Kahnawake itself doesn’t recognize me as a member. Federal law gives me some access only to Federal benefits, but the community decides my #cultural and #political belonging and the two don’t always line up.
The #IndianAct was created with the intent to end #IndianStatus through many means including marriage to non-status Canadians. I am very happy to see this injustice corrected, no one should lose their identity because of who they love. #CDNPoli #CDNSenate #BillS2 #Canada #CanadaSky #Indigenous
