Atura Power Expands Battery Energy Storage System Project in Ontario Atura Power is back before the Greater Napanee Council, presenting a revised plan for Phase 2 of their battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The revised proposal outlines a significantly expanded facility, now boasting a 300-megawatt capacity with the ability to store energy for up to eight hours. This expansion is intended to address the projected surge in Ontario’s electricity needs, with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) forecasting a 75% increase in demand by 2050. The proposed location for this larger BESS facility is within the industrial sector of the Lennox and Addington Generating Station. Atura's plan involves leasing approximately 15 to 20 acres of farmland to accommodate the project. A public consultation session is scheduled for June 26th to gather community feedback. Despite the proposal, some remain hesitant. Councillor Michael Schenk has voiced apprehensions regarding the project's placement near agricultural lands and residential areas. Atura anticipates formally submitting its application to the IESO by December 18th. Assuming a favorable outcome, construction activities are currently slated to occur between 2028 and 2029.
