Renewable Energy Development in Alberta Faces Significant Downturn as Investment Plummets
Alberta's renewable energy sector is experiencing a significant downturn, with proposals for wind, solar, and energy storage projects plummeting by as much as 64% since 2023, while natural gas project proposals have increased by 32%. This shift in priorities has been attributed to recent government policies introducing uncertainty into the market, including regulations restricting renewable energy development in certain areas and increased security requirements. As a result, over 11 gigawatts of proposed renewable and storage projects have been scrapped, highlighting concerns from industry representatives that overly cautious regulation is hindering investment and deterring growth in clean energy development.
