IOC는 1일 한국시간 기준으로 장웅 전 위원의 사망 사실을 알리며 애도를 표했다. IOC는 공식 홈페이지를 통해 애도 입장을 밝히는 한편 스위스 로잔 올림픽 하우스에서 사흘 동안 오륜기를 조기 게양하겠다고 발표하며 장웅 전 위원의 공헌을 기렸다. 1996년 IOC 위원 선출…20여년간 북한 대표 국제 스포츠 외교 역할. (사진=연합뉴스) 연합뉴스 보도에 따르면 북한 관영 매체인 조선중앙통신 등은 아직 장웅 전 위원의 사망 소식을 전하지 않은 상태다. 국내외에서는 IOC 발표를 통해 먼저 비보가 알려지며 장웅 전 위원의 이력과 역할이 다시 조명되고 있다. 장웅 전 위원은 1938년 7월 5일 평양에서 태어났다. 농구 선수로 경력을 시작해 북한 대표팀에서 활약했으며, 이후 지도자로 전향해 국내 무대에서 선수 육성과 팀 운영을 담당했다. 지도자 생활 이후에는 북한올림픽위원회에 합류해 행정가로 활동했다. 1976년 캐나다 몬트리올 올림픽에서 통역요원으로 참가한 것을 계기로 각종 국제회의에 북한 대표로 계속 나서면서, 국제 스포츠 기구와의 접점을 확대하고 외교 무대에서 영향력을 넓혔다. 이러한 활동을 바탕으로 장웅 전 위원은 1996년 IOC 총회에서 고 이건희 삼성그룹 회장과 함께 IOC 위원으로 선출됐다. 당시 선출을 기점으로 20여 년 동안 북한의 입장을 국제 스포츠 사회에 전달하는 역할을 맡았고, 여러 국제대회와 회의에서 북한을 대표하는 인물로 자리매김했다. 다만 장웅 전 위원은 2010년대 후반 들어 건강이 악화됐다. 2018 평창 동계 올림픽 기간 한국을 찾았지만, 건강 문제로 폐회식까지 머무르지 못하고 조기에 북한으로 복귀하는 등 활동 반경이 점차 제한됐다. 국제무대 공식 석상에 마지막으로 모습을 드러낸 것은 2019년 6월 스위스 로잔에서 열린 IOC 134차 총회였다. 해당 총회 이후에는 현장 행사에 직접 참석하지 못했고, IOC 관련 일정에서도 이름을 찾아보기 어려워지면서 건강 상태에 대한 관심이 이어졌다. 그러나 장웅 전 위원은 물리적 제약 속에서도 IOC와의 연을 이어갔다. 2023년 10월 인도 뭄바이에서 열린 IOC 141차 총회에는 화상 방식으로 참여해 올림픽 훈장(공로장)을 수상했고, 오랜 올림픽 운동 기여에 대한 국제사회의 평가를 받았다. 장웅 전 위원은 스포츠를 남북 관계 완화의 수단으로 활용한 대표적 인물로 평가돼 왔다. 1986년 남북체육회담에서 핵심 역할을 맡았으며, 남북 체육 교류의 틀을 논의하는 과정에서 실무를 조율하며 스포츠 협력 기반을 다졌다. 이어 1991년 일본 지바 세계탁구선수권대회에서는 남북 단일팀 결성 실무위원회 북측위원장을 맡았다. 당시 단일팀 구성과 운영 문제를 둘러싼 협의에 적극 나서면서, 세계선수권 무대에서 남북이 한 팀으로 출전하는 데 크게 기여했다. 무엇보다 장웅 전 위원은 올림픽 개회식 남북 공동 입장 성사에 깊이 관여한 인물로 알려져 있다. 2000년 호주 시드니 하계 올림픽 개회식에서 남북 선수단이 한반도기를 들고 동시 입장하는 장면이 연출됐고, 이후 2018년 평창 동계 올림픽 개회식에서도 남북 공동 입장이 재현되는 과정에 장웅 전 위원이 역할을 했다. 평창 동계 올림픽 당시 장웅 전 위원은 개회식을 지켜본 직후 국내 취재진과 만나 소감을 전하기도 했다. 장웅 전 위원은 당시 인터뷰에서 취재진이 느낀 감정과 자신이 느낀 감정이 다르지 않다며 가슴이 뭉클했다고 말해, 남북 공동 입장을 직접 지켜본 인물의 심정을 전했다. IOC는 장웅 전 위원의 남북 교류 촉진 활동도 별도로 조명했다. IOC는 공식 입장을 통해 장웅 전 위원이 스포츠가 가진 통합의 힘을 강조해 온 인물이었고, 스포츠를 통한 대화를 꾸준히 지지해 왔다고 설명하며 역할을 소개했다. 또 국제무대에서 태권도 단체 간 관계 개선에도 장웅 전 위원이 관여한 점을 부각했다. If the #IOC continues their ban on trans athletes, that only serves to oppress women. To understand that dynamic, knowledge of advanced biology is needed.

Unfortunately, the uneducated insulate themselves from that knowledge.
