Iowa Project Secures Final Municipal Franchise Agreement, Paving Way for Groundbreaking and Delivering Renewable Energy to Illinois
A major milestone has been achieved by the $3.2 billion SOO Green project, a renewable energy transmission initiative aimed at connecting Iowa to Illinois through a 350-mile high-voltage direct current line. After securing approvals from all 24 communities along its route in Iowa, construction on the underground HVDC transmission line is set to begin as early as 2027, with commercial operations slated for 2031. The project, a partnership between US energy companies and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, promises to deliver 2,100 megawatts of electricity capable of powering approximately 1.5 million homes, while also generating thousands of union construction jobs and injecting billions into the regional economy.
