Vanishing point: Framed in darkness, Jack Delano’s photograph shows the view out the back of a caboose on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad between Belen and Gallup, New Mexico. Delano rode the rails in the state in March 1943 to document the railroad’s operations in support of the war effort. The FSA/OWI records note that “This image (was) in a jacket marked ‘Killed.’"

Jack Delano visited Mauch Chunk, in northeastern Pennsylvania, in August 1940, producing more than 120 negatives. The photograph shows one of the main streets in the town, captured in beautiful light with a large selection of parked vehicles. A building on the right side is labeled F.O.E,, for Fraternal Order of Eagles. The coal-mining and railroad town of Mauch Chunk was renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954 in honor of the native American athlete who was interred there the same year.

Locomotive repairs: Two Chicago & Northwestern Railroad maintenance men work on a steam locomotive in the repair shops. The worker at the left, outside the locomotive, examines the headlight, while the second works inside the smokebox at the front of the engine. Jack Delano made the image in December 1942, during a period when he frequently photographed railroad operations to highight the industry’s role in the war effort.

Jack Delano photographed the chaotic interior of an abandoned stove factory in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, in January 1940. The image shows a jumble of parts, machinery, tools and scrap on the left and right sides of the frame, with an irregular path through the middle of the wooden floor. Howard Stove Works manufactured cast-iron stoves of various kinds before it closed.

Hammer time: Jack Delano photographed construction work at the Fort Loudoun Dam in Tennessee in August 1942. In this image, hard-hatted workers wield jackhammers on a steep slope, raising dust as they break up the rocks. The Tennessee Valley Authority, a New Deal agency, built hydroelectric projects to control flooding and bring electric power and economic development to the region. Constructed on the Tennessee River, the Fort Loudoun project went online in 1943.

Pinball wizard: At the Serbian Club in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, in January 1941, Jack Delano made this black-and-white photograph of a steelworker playing a pinball game called O’Boy as three of his buddies watched. Coats and hats are hanging on the wall behind the machine; the player has kept his hat on. The Chicago Coin Machine Co. manufactured about 1,700 of the O’Boy bowling-themed pinball machines.
