Have a happy & safe Easter Sunday everyone. #White-tailed #Jackrabbits like this fellow, who I photographed last May on #SAIT campus, can be seen in most #Calgary neighbourhoods. I’ve taken many #photos of #rabbits & hares over the years, but only this guy looked at me with both eyes. #photography
Two white-tailed jackrabbits (actually a species of hare, not true rabbits) sit in the newly-revealed brown grass after much of the snow has melted. The two jacks are still mostly in their winter white camouflage, which doesn't work so well. There is one to the top-left of the frame, slightly out of focus and looking towards the camera at frame center. It is sitting upright and alert, with both ears raised. Some brown fur is starting to come in on the face, chest, and front legs. There is a second jack at the bottom-right of the frame, facing directly away from the camera, with its head down in the grass, so it looks like a furry white bowling ball with two dark-marked eartips sticking up and a tiny bit of brown showing on the tail.
"Hey, Marge?"
"Ya, Thelma?"
"I'm not sure our camouflage is working any more."
(The one at bottom-right looks like she could use some hare conditioner...)

Two jackrabbits by a fence. Shoreline Park, Mountain View CA.
Jackrabbit. Shoreline Park, Mountain View CA. Cropped picture taken with an iPhone. They've since trimmed the bushes, so the rabbits are less likely to hang out there. (There's still plenty of habitat between the golf course and swamp, but they're less visible there.)
Some of the #jackrabbits at my local park.
We occasionally get a California Brush Rabbit as well, but mostly jacks.
(Also lots of geese, ground squirrels, and the occasional coyote 🦊.)
A giant jackrabbit runs toward the camera, huge ears like antennae.
This jackrabbit moves to the right of the camera, in profile, showing off its black tail and black-tipped ears.
Hippity-hoppity. You can see how black-tailed #jackrabbits got their name! #cameratrap
A desert cottontail sits to left and a black-tailed jackrabbit to right - both hunched up and eating small shoots from the ground.
In this picture, both have their long ears up and are facing the camera, giving a good size difference in overall height and ear length.
Fantastic example of the size difference between dessert #cottonails and black-tailed #jackrabbits.
At the #cameratrap pond.

A White-tailed Jackrabbit in Summer.
Come December and the #White-tailed #Jackrabbits which roam the city of #Calgary in large numbers change colour from brown to white. Their ears remain dark, but natural predators - coyotes, bobcats and wolves - still have a much harder time spotting these hares (yes, they are #hares). #photography

This video was taken on July 18, 2025, at my field in Northern California of jackrabbit foraging as a covey of quail pass by. I see this jackrabbit following with the covey like they are a part of it. This is a common morning view at my field. #nature #videography #jackrabbits #hares #quail

The South Dakota State #Jackrabbits were supposed to be an 8 seed. They're a 10 and will beat Oklahoma State. #UConn could've been a 1, but is a 2. Both will have a chip on their shoulder in the 2nd round. Epic match up in the making. #NCAA #MarchMadness #WBB

Jack rabbit drawings by Donna Ridgway. Sketches of jack rabbits.
We were lucky to get some photographs of jack rabbits. I love jack rabbits! We have plenty of cottontails in our yard, and we love them, but it's kind of rare and extra fun to see jack rabbits. They have such interesting faces and long legs.

This piece is called “Visionary” and it’s the top search on my website from a tiny old blog post about connection to animals. This is also my favorite piece and I use it often. Rabbits symbolize abundance, spontaneity, and intuition. #rabbits #hares #jackrabbits #art
Last one for tonight.
A study of the argy-bargy behaviour of #jackrabbits. They're solitary and territorial, so when they get together like this, there's the rabbit/hare equivalent of pushing and shoving that goes on. Nobody here gets hurt, so it's interesting to watch.

Six white-tailed jackrabbits (a species of hare) are in a snow-covered front yard in the prairies of Canada. They are caught in the middle of a bit of a melee, as they're in a fairly small area and they are territorial and solitary. At center-left, one has its front paws in the air, "boxing" towards the one in the middle of the frame. At center-right, another is just starting to rear up, again facing the one in the middle. At center of frame, a jackrabbit is in mid-air, having jumped straight upwards to escape the developing fight. Three additional jacks look on, two from the background, and one in the bottom-right corner of the frame.
An #action shot from today. There's six #jackrabbits in the front yard in this one, and getting them crammed in like this results in territorial behaviour.
The three across the center of the frame, from left to right are:
1) "Boxing" the one in the middle […]

I mentioned that #jackrabbits / #hares are solitary and territorial before. As they are cute little #bunnies, some people find it hard to believe.
Here's a short video I shot today. One approaches another, and they start "boxing" and #grunting at each other (sound up!). This one doesn't turn […]
Another short video of the white-tailed #jackrabbits (a kind of #hare, not #rabbit, are you sick of this yet?) in my front yard.
Here, there are two facing each other from a short distance away, and eating something from off the ground. They keep a wary eye […]

A white-tailed jackrabbit, which is a kind of hare rather than a rabbit, sits on a snowbank facing away from the camera, mostly looking outwards like he's trying to assess his domain. His fur has changed to winter-white for camouflage, but there are dark streaks and black tips on the ears, and a few other brownish markings on the face, most of which can't be seen here. Only the hare is in focus; the remainder is blurred white snow. One eye is visible on the side of the head. He's keeping an eye on the photographer as a possible threat, as I was only about 8 meters behind him.
A pair of wild white-tailed jackrabbits (hares) seen in the snow in my front yard in Saskatchewan, Canada, in the middle of the prairies. One is sitting up, facing mostly away from the camera, but with one eye on the side of its head keeping the photographer in view as a possible threat. The second is facing more across the frame of the image, in a somewhat extended body position, head low and in front of the front paws, as it sniffs something on the ground in front of it. The ears are pointed upward and outward. The front and hind feet are in a "ready" position so it can run quickly if there is a threat. Its eye is clearly visible with full detail. Both are in their white winter coats, with dark markings on the ears and nose.

Black tailed jackrabbit entitled “In Wonderland”. These amazing creatures are about the size of a small dog and their large ears help to dissipate the desert heat. #wildlife #sonorandesert #canon #wildlifephotography #arizona #jackrabbit #jackrabbits #photography
A photograph of a hare (White-tailed jackrabbit) in close-up, looking directly at the camera. His or her head and partial body fill the frame. This is taken in winter, so their coat has changed to mostly white, with darker markings on the ears and nose. The whiskers are visible but out of focus. There is no background to speak of. The eye on the south-facing side of the hare's head clearly shows a reflection of the bright overcast sky, and dark markings right around the eye appear like it is wearing makeup. It's a handsome beast.
Another photograph of the same jackrabbit as the previous photo. In this one, the head is turned somewhat, so it's more like a 3/4 shot. It's the same white fur with dark markings on the ears and nose, and a hint of colour around the mouth. Visible in this show is the "muzzlepouche" upper lip/cheeks and the lower lip, forming the classic slightly-worried upside-down "Y" shape. You can see that the lips are covered with fuzzy fur.

A wild hare, of the species White-tailed Jackrabbit (which aren't rabbits), also just called "jackrabbits" or "jacks" in the prairies. This one sits in the middle of a snowy yard, the rest of which is out of focus. There are a few rabbit turds - little black dots - scattered here and there, standing out against the snow. He or she is mostly white in their winter coat, with black eartips and brown markings on the nose and around the face. He is sitting with haunches on the ground, front feet together with head erect - sitting up - and with ears erect but not in "threat is near" swivel mode. He is looking at the photographer, who is only about 5 meters away.

The scene is mostly white snow, with only the subject in focus. He is seen in profile, with head turned towards the camera. The ears are erect and fully "deployed", facing 180 degrees apart, listening for possible threats. He appears to be looking directly into the camera.
More #Canadian #prairie #jackrabbits (again, actually a kind of #hare, not #rabbit...) from my wintry yard today.
