Besides a merchantess, benefactor, and city planner of #Delhi, Princess #Jahanara authored two books: Muʼnis al-arvāḥ (1640; image: Or. 5637, ff. 122-23), a biography of her teacher, the #Sufi mystic Moinuddin #Chishti, and the Risala-i-Sahibiya (1641), the only 17thc memoir by a #Mughal woman.

Princess #Jahanara was a skilled #merchantess herself. She had previously bought ships at Surat to trade with #Dutch merchants, many of whom would eventually visit Chandni Chowk. She used her profits to finance her new square, mosques and support the needy in Mecca and Medina.

Princess #Jahanara had envisaged the area of Chandni Chowk in #Delhi, which looked out on her father's main residence, the Red Fort, as a site for thriving commerce and "havelis" (mansions) of the elite, filled with gardens, water bodies & religious houses of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Muslims.

Exploring #Delhi's 17th-century #bazaar: Chandni Chowk or 'Moonlight Square'. Designed in 1650 by a #Mughal princess: #Jahanara Begum, Emperor Shah #Jahan's favourite daughter. Running across the square was a canal that ran on water from the #Yamuna River, which was said to shimmer in the moonlight.
