We are continuing our weekly artwork feature today, as well as, our rainbow / pride-inspired artworks for the month of June! Today we're happy to be sharing, '"I *am* God" - Divine' a 20x20" Mixed Media on Canvas from December 2024. [Original Artwork Available @ https://www.craigscanvases.com/shop/p/i-am-god-divine] The inspiration [both image and title] for this artwork are a scene and quote from John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos” wherein Divine portrays Babs Johnson.
Mr. Vader: Do you believe in God?
Divine: I *am* God!
Cotton: [to Crackers] You are God!
Crackers: [to Cotton] You are God.

Artist's Statement / Backstory: I feel there is a lack of gay icons and trailblazers being painted by LGBTQIA+ Artists, much less any artists; so, at the end of last year I started working toward fixing that issue... This was the first time I've ever painted a drag queen and realized doing the extended make-up overtop human anatomy was far more of a challenge than what I thought it ever might be! Overall I wanted to create an image that was realistic to those who were familiar with the movie while elevating the tacky and absurd nature of all things Divine & John Waters! I'm happy to say this piece is currently in Lancaster, PA as part of the Queer Art Feature for the month of June 2025.
