Part I - #JosefNassy was an Afro-Jewish #artist + #Holocausttsurvivor born in 1904 in Surinam. His father was Jewish + his mother Surinamese, of African descent. In 1928 Nassy received work in Europe with Warner Brothers. #blackhistorymonth
Part II - In 1934, Nassy decided to study painting. In 1939, he married a Belgian + earned a living as a portrait #artist. The Germans occupied Belgium in May 1940 and after the USA entered the war, Nassy was arrested and spent the rest of the war in a camp in Germany #josefnassy #blackhistorymonth
Part III - Over the next 3 years, with the help of the Red Cross, Nassy was provided with art supplies, allowing him to create more than 200 paintings + drawings that would depict life in the camps. #josefnassy #art #artist #blackhistorymonth #artworld #afrojewish #blackartist
