Watch our Chair @kirstybrimelow.bsky.social explain to MPs why the government needs to focus on what's really causing delays in rape and sexual offence cases. The Bar knows operationally what works - and what doesn't - because barristers are in court every day.

"Recently, there have been delays because the cells have been too cold for defendants or Serco staff to use. Defendants are routinely delivered late by Serco, and there are no contractual penalties. That is pushing cases back repeatedly.”

We heard in the debate on juries this week that MPs really value visiting their local Crown Courts to hear directly from barristers about what’s happening in the criminal justice system.

Tonight, I voted to defend our jury system.

Jury trials are a fundamental right and undermining them threatens the foundations of our democracy.

A quote attributed to Kirsty Brimelow KC, Chair of the Bar Council, on a pink background. The text reads: We have long called for the limit on the number of days that courts can sit to be removed and are encouraged that this is being implemented... We fully support and share the government’s aim of bringing down the 80,000 backlog in the criminal courts and tackling the chronic delays. However, we continue to oppose the government’s proposed restriction of jury trials. It will drain precious resources away from the needed reforms that can be implemented now and place additional pressure on a stretched and stressed workforce.

We're encouraged that the government has announced investment in the criminal courts that will allow courts to run at maximum capacity next year.
However we continue to oppose the government’s proposed restriction of jury trials because #JusticeNeedsJuries

@thecriminalbar.bsky.social is clear: “there is no evidence that this major constitutional reform would solve the crisis.”

Tackle the real causes of the backlog and do not introduce counter-productive reforms. We must protect jury trials.

Visited Liverpool Crown Court as part of a Court Constituency Day with @thebarcouncil.bsky.social.

Message was clear: scrapping jury trials won’t fix delays. Liverpool’s low backlog & strong workplace culture show what’s possible & what should be replicated nationally.

Pleased to have joined The Criminal Bar Association in Parliament this week on their #JusticeNeedsJuries campaign alongside my colleague Karl Turner MP

We need to take action to end delays in the criminal justice system but removing the right to a trial by jury is not the way to do it.
