UDF takes solace in narrow loss in Kamanjab by-election United Democratic Front (UDF) national spokesperson Mabasen Narib says although the party lost Kamanjab to Swapo, the loss was very narrow. “We take solace in the fact that the margin of loss was narrow. This gives us hope and renewed motivation. With hard work, discipline, and determination, we will change the tide,” he says. Narib says this in a statement issued on Thursday on behalf of party president Hendrik Gaobaeb. The UDF was only able to get 835 votes out of 2 044 cast, compared to the 1 090 votes Swapo received. He called on branch management committees and section leadership to commence preparations for the upcoming regional and local authority elections in November. “We must reclaim the Kamanjab constituency and restore the confidence of the people in our movement. I’m particularly proud of our performance in the Grootfontein constituency. Let’s build on this momentum – we will make inroads, and we will govern,” he says. Narib says this is only the beginning of their journey towards broader representation and service delivery. He commended the UDF leaders for their commitment, energy, and high level of discipline they demonstrated throughout the campaign. He said their efforts have not gone unnoticed, and their dedication has made a significant difference. Narib also commended all candidates who made themselves available for the “noble cause”, stating that their courage and selflessness are the bedrock of Namibia’s democracy. Voting going well at Kamanjab and Sesfontein UAKUTURA KAMBAEKUA Voting in the Kamanjab and Sesfontein constituencies started off smoothly on Tuesday, with all 44 polling stations operating effectively. The by-elections started at 07h00 and will end at 21h00, followed by the counting of votes. Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Kunene election officer Mike Nganjone said all polling stations opened on time and the queues grew as the day progressed. No incidents had been reported by midday, he said. At the Elias Amxab Secondary School polling station at Sesfontein, ECN commissioner Pius Iikwambi urged voters to come out in large numbers to cast their votes for their chosen candidates. “We urge community members to turn up in large numbers to exercise their democratic right to vote,” he said, adding that the commission has made the necessary arrangements with private property owners to allow polling officials access their properties for the voting process. Iikwambi said all systems were functioning smoothly and mentioned that the civic education programme has been running alongside voter registration and the voting process. Rinondjamo Tjomazeva, the presiding officer at the Omarumba polling station, also spoke to Nampa, expressing expectations for increased voter turnout. The by-elections were necessitated by the appointment of Kamanjab councillors Nico and Hendrick Somaeb of Sesfontein to the National Assembly in March. – Nampa The post Voting going well at Kamanjab and Sesfontein appeared first on The Namibian.

PDM to support UDF candidate in Kamanjab by-election Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) secretary general Manuel Ngaringombe says they will be supporting the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in the regional constituency by-elections at Kamanjab, in the Kunene region. Ngaringombe on Thursday urged all PDM members in the Kamanjab constituency to support and vote for UDF candidate Jacobus Namaseb. “This gesture is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to fostering strong hovernance in the Kunene region through the collaborative efforts of the PDM and UDF,” he said. Although the party does not have a candidate for Kamnajab, it is taking party in the Sesfontein, Otjiwarongo and Grootfontein by-elections. The by-elections are slated for 17 June. Ngaringombe further called for a strong voter turnout in these by-elections and encouraged all eligible voters to participate actively in strengthening democratic governance. Seven candidates gun for Kamanjab, Sesfontein regional councillor posts The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has announced the names of candidates set to contest by-elections in the Kamanjab and Sesfontein constituencies on 17 June 2025, with a total of seven candidates vetted and approved. ECN Kunene regional electoral officer Mike Nganjone informed Nampa on Friday that three candidates have been successfully registered to compete in the by-election in the Kamanjab constituency. Four other candidates will be running in the by-election in the Sesfontein constituency. According to Nganjone, the three candidates for the Kamanjab constituency by-election are Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Dansiekie Ganaseb, Nikodemus Amutenya of Swapo and Jacobus Buruxa Namaseb of the United Democratic Front (UDF). In the Sesfontein constituency, the candidates are Titus Uaundjua Rungondo for Swapo, Bennie Ganaseb for the IPC, Bernadus Uitani Hoeb for the UDF and Joshua Vemuii Kaisuma, representing the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM). Nganjone stated that the commission did not receive applications from independent candidates in both constituencies. ECN voter education officer Santos Muhenje confirmed that a civic and voter education initiative is still in progress. “Teams are scheduled to visit both constituencies on 13 May, focusing primarily on engaging new and old voters” he said. Muhenje said their goal is to ensure that all constituents understand their rights and the political system, as well as how and where to vote. They will also provide impartial and objective information to help voters exercise their right to vote effectively. “We have three teams, with two of those covering Sesfontein, while one team will go to Kamanjab. This process will run concurrently with the voting process so we will only conclude after the voting process is done,” said Muhenje. The by-elections in the two constituencies were necessitated by the election of UDF regional councillors Nico Somaeb (Kamanjab) and Hendrik Gaobaeb (Sesfontein) to the National Assembly, where they took up seats in March. Construction of an inclusive resource school in Kamanjab set to begin Niël Terblanché Construction of a special school for differently abled children in Kamanjab will soon begin, following a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday. Speaking at the event on behalf of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare described the Kunene Region Resource School project as a milestone in Namibia’s education infrastructure. He said the government has made access to inclusive, quality education a priority, with a commitment to ensure that no child is left behind, regardless of ability, location, or circumstance. The school will cater specifically to learners with hearing, visual, and intellectual impairments. It will include adapted classrooms, hostel blocks, ablution facilities, a kitchen, and a dining area. “This is not an ordinary school. It is a purpose-built space designed with care, adapted to the curriculum, and aligned with Namibia’s Sector Policy on Inclusive Education,” he said. Sanet Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, said education must go where children are. She called the project one that restores equity, one classroom, one child, one future at a time. She paid tribute to former Kunene Region Governor Marius Sheya, who first advocated for a dedicated resource school. “Their efforts were not loud. They were persistent,” she said. Steenkamp said Kamanjab was deliberately chosen because of its central location and good road access, making it an ideal hub to serve the wider Kunene Region. She confirmed that the first phase of construction, valued at about N$34.8 million, would be completed during the 2025/2026 financial year. Steenkamp said the school is not just about access. “It is about belonging. We act with purpose so that every child, regardless of the challenges they may face, finds their place in the Namibian house,” she said. The resource school is part of a broader drive to expand education infrastructure, launched after the 2022 National Conference on Education, with the goal to improve inclusive access across all fourteen regions by 2030. She said once completed, the school will stand as a symbol of Namibia’s resolve to make inclusivity and equality a reality. Steenkamp urged educators to lead with compassion and called on all stakeholders to work with one vision and one purpose to complete the school.

Prime minister Elijah Ngurare breaks ground for Kunene resource school Prime minister Elijah Ngurare on Saturday officiated the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a resource school at Kamanjab in the Kunene region. Ngurare was accompanied by his deputy, Natangwe Ithete, education minister Sanet Steenkamp, Kunene governor Vipua Muharukua, and other dignitaries. Speaking on behalf of president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Ngurare said Kamanjab’s central location and accessibility makes it an ideal site for the school. “Furthermore, we have taken deliberate steps to ensure the construction process itself is streamlined. By partnering with a public entity for the execution of this first phase, we are prioritising both efficiency and accountability.” He said the first phase of the project is worth about N$34.8 million and will be completed within this financial year. Steenkamp heralded the project as one bringing dignity to every child in the region. “Today we gather, not to break ground for a school alone, but to affirm something deeper – the dignity of every child, regardless of their ability or circumstance. “We are here because education must go where children are, we are called to see differently, to act courageously, and to build deliberately,” she said. Over 1 000 voters registered at Kamanjab, Sesfontein ahead of by-elections A total of 1 039 eligible voters were registered during the supplementary process in the Kunene region’s Kamanjab and Sesfontein constituencies ahead of by-elections in June. The three-day supplementary registration process commenced on Thursday and concluded at 19h00 on Saturday. Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) election officer for the Kunene region Mike Nganjone told Nampa on Tuesday that the registration exercise went smoothly, noting only minor technical issues related to the voter registration kits. “Although we faced a few minor issues with the kits, there were no significant challenges that could have delayed or disrupted the registration process. We successfully registered all eligible voters who showed up at the stations,” Nganjone said. He said Kamanjab registered 249 voters, while Sesfontein saw a total of 790 eligible voters registered. Nganjone expressed satisfaction with the turnout during the registration period. The eligible registrants included those who turned 18 this year, individuals who lost or damaged their voter’s cards, residents who relocated to the Kamanjab and Sesfontein constituencies, and those who did not receive voter’s cards in 2024. The supplementary registration and by-elections are intended to fill the vacancies created by Nico Somaeb of Kamanjab and Hedrick Gaobaeb of Sesfontein, both of whom joined the National Assembly under the United Democratic Front (UDF) after resigning from their positions as councillors. According to the Regional Councils Act, elections must be held within 90 days prior to the next elections when a vacancy arises to fill that vacancy. Additionally, Nganjone highlighted the critical role of voter education during elections, stressing the need for ongoing initiatives to ensure the public is well-informed about the electoral process. He said voter and civic education efforts will continue until the voting date, set for 17 June.
