"I hear music that comes out of need, out of grief, sorrow, suffering and out of overcoming these things...It's an incremental change, the culmination of many events in your own life and the lives of your children and grandchildren."

Kathleen Battle was born on August 13, 1948 in Portsmouth, Ohio. Originally trained as a music teacher, she was encouraged by conductor Thomas Schippers, who recognized the extraordinary purity and agility of her voice. Her 1977 debut at the Metropolitan Opera launched an international career marked by luminous performances in works by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss.

Battle’s radiant tone and expressive phrasing made her a favorite of conductor James Levine and audiences worldwide. In the early 1990s, tensions during rehearsals culminated in a dispute with conductor Christian Thielemann over tempo during a production of Der Rosenkavalier. After she walked out of rehearsals and canceled scheduled performances, the Met general manager Joseph Volpe dismissed her in 1994, citing her behavior as "harmful to artistic collaboration."

Despite the public setback, Battle continued performing recitals, spirituals, and concert works worldwide. In a powerful moment of reconciliation, she returned to the Met in 2016 at the invitation of general manager Peter Gelb for the recital of Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey, reaffirming her enduring artistry and legacy.

I have never understood why people have such animosity toward #KathleenBattle as an operatic singer? Why is she "inappropriate"? Just listen to her in her 1994 recording of the #MozartCoronationMass, or #PoulencGloria, and you will be carried away with ecstasy. #musicsky #opera
