ECB’s Kazimir says big unexpected economic shift needed for September rate cut FRANKFURT (Reuters) -The European Central Bank is not in any hurry to lower borrowing costs again and it would take a major unexpected economic shift to make a case for action in September, Slovak policymaker Peter Kazimir said on Monday. The ECB kept rates unchanged last week as widely expected and offered a moderately upbeat assessment on the bloc’s economy, prompting investors to scale back their bets on further policy easing. "When it comes to incoming data, I don’t expect anything significant to happen that would force my hand to act as soon as September," Kazimir said in a blog post. "It would take something like clear signs of unravelling in the labour market for me to act." This assessment aligns with comments from ECB sources that the bar for a cut in September is high after the bank has already halved rates to 2% since June 2024. Sunday’s EU trade deal with the U.S. was clearly a positive since it reduces uncertainty for businesses, but the impact on prices, the ECB’s chief focus, was still unclear. "This (trade deal) can help to ease concerns and regain confidence," Kazimir said. "We now have more clarity, but we will need time to see to what extent this new environment will affect inflation." Weighing in on a key debate among policymakers, Kazimir said he did not see a risk that inflation would now undershoot the ECB’s 2% target, much like it did in the pre-pandemic decade. Price growth is seen dipping below 2% next year and only rebounding in 2027, raising worries among some governors that once inflation is well below 2%, expectations also fall and could perpetuate weak price growth. He added that trade turmoil also created upside risks for inflation, particularly if global supply chains were realigned, creating bottlenecks.

ECB close to being done with rate cuts, Kazimir says FRANKFURT (Reuters) -The European Central Bank is nearly done with interest rate cuts and should watch data through the summer months to determine whether a little more policy fine-tuning may be needed, Slovak policymaker Peter Kazimir said on Monday. The ECB cut rates for the eighth time last Thursday and signalled that it may now pause after it fastest policy easing cycle since the 2008/2009 global financial crisis. The ECB’s deposit rate now stands at 2% and investors price in just one more cut, to 1.75%, towards the end of the year "As things stand now, I think we’re nearly done with, if not already at the end of, the easing cycle," Kazimir said in an opinion piece. While economic growth could turn out weaker than expected, Kazimir also said it would be a mistake to ignore risks that inflation, the ECB’s primary focus, could turn out higher. "Incoming data throughout the summer will provide a clearer picture and guide our decisions on whether further fine-tuning is needed," Kazimir added. ECB close to hitting inflation target, Kazimir says (Reuters) -The European Central Bank could hit its 2% inflation target in the coming few months but the broader economic outlook is far too uncertain for the bank to provide any meaningful guidance about its next policy move, ECB policymaker Peter Kazimir said. The ECB cut interest rates for the seventh time in a year on Thursday but offered few signals about future moves, even as it warned that erratic U.S. trade policy is bound to weigh on growth and risked heightened economic volatility. "Inflation is approaching its target, and I am confident that we will reach it within the next few months," Kazimir, Slovakia’s central bank governor, said in a blog post. The bank earlier predicted that inflation would only get to 2% in early 2026 so Kazimir’s comments suggest that price growth could fall quicker in the current environment than last forecast. Kazimir also argued that rate cuts have now put the ECB’s 2.25% deposit rate in a range that no longer restricts economic growth and it could be considered to be near a neutral stance. Kazimir cautioned against trying to predict where policy is going because of risks and "today’s volatile and often chaotic conditions." "We are operating in a fast-shifting environment," Kazimir said. "Uncertainty dominates the economic landscape." "Heightened global trade tensions, particularly those stemming from U.S. tariff policies, have introduced significant ambiguity into the system, eroding confidence," he added. Markets still price at least two more rate cuts this year and see a 50% chance of a third move, suggesting that the deposit rate could end 2025 at 1.50% or 1.75%. Kazimir, however, insisted that decisions would be based on incoming data and the ECB was not on a preset course. "June’s decision will depend heavily on new data, updated forecasts and risk assessment," Kazimir said. "This reinforces our commitment to flexibility and agility."
